Create Charts with Geni and TreeSeek

Posted May 16, 2011 by Geni | 34 Comments

We’re very proud to announce that TreeSeek is now completely integrated with Geni. You can now log in with your Geni account, and make some really great charts of your family tree for free. It’s simple and fast, so here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Log in with your Geni.com credentials.

Step 1

Step 2: Create your tree by picking a profile to center on. For example, you’re the central person by default.

Step 2

Step 3: Pick a type of fan chart from the drop-down menu, and then click “Create Chart.”

Step 3

u00a0I can’t seem to add any profile other than my own as the “starting person.” u00a0Apparently it’s using some kind of numbering convention for the “Profile ID” that is different than anything I’ve ever seen before.

    • http://twitter.com/geni Geni

      u00a0I’ll look into this, Geoff.

  • Matthew Hall

I would love to try this out, but it appears that Firefox 3 and Chrome are the only supported browsers. Firefox 4 and 11 don’t work.

    • Aaron Kromhout

u00a0It appears to work with Safari 5.0 on Mac

  • Matthew Hall

I agree with Geoff that it doesn’t appear obvious how to create a ntree with someone other than yourself as the starting person. On Geni I nam profile 432246, but on Tree Seek I amu00a0295933. Before I realized that nthe numbers were so far off, I guessed that my wife was 1 number higher nthan me, so I tried 295934 and got someone not in my tree.nnnAlso after trying the site in Chrome, the page to downloadn the chart doesn’t have any navigation to get back to the site to view nother charts, etc.nnThis shows that this site is definitely Beta and not production ready.nu00a0

u00a0It also appears that the Delete button is the same Create Tree, so I can delete the bogus trees I ended up with trying to find my wife.nnAlso, my marriage date wasn’t included in my tree even though it is entered on Geni.

u00a0Here is how to find the correct profile-id of a person.n1. Go to the person you want to start your chart with at geni.comn2. The profile-id is embedded in the “History” link towards the center of the page

    • http://twitter.com/georgegeni George Geni

For reference, this is an issue due to our migration to a new data backend. u00a0We are currently using a certain type of user id for all of our profiles (which our users have become accustomed to), but we are very slowly migrating Geni’s data to a new system, and Matt’s site is using the ids for the new system based on how our API works. u00a0Stay tuned, and we’ll have some clarification added to this blog post in the near future.nnThanks,n-George

u00a0It would be nice if that were true. There is no “History” on anyone’s profile that I can find. There is a “Revisions” tab, but that has the same id that is in the URL, which is different than what TreeSeek comes up with for me.

      • Matt

The History link is just below the Revisions tab.u00a0

        • Matthew Hall

Clicking the History tab still only shows my profile I’d on Geni (432246) which is different than what Tree Seek finds for me (295933).

          • Matthew Hall

u00a0I finally noticed that hovering over the History link (not clicking it) shows this different profile id.

u00a0it is in “About” section – edit/historynnI had hard time to find it too :-)

        • LeeGonHo

Like Matthew there is no “History” on anyone’s profile. Nothing in theu00a0″About” section – edit/historyu00a0u00a0

  • Matt

u00a0I fixed the browser problem. TreeSeek.com should be working in all browsers again.

It would be great, if only it supported unicode…u00a0

    • Matt

u00a0I agree. We are trying to bring you unicode support in the near future.

      • Per Hoffmann Olsen

So, that was two years ago, it still doens’t work

  • Oddbju00f8rn Olsen

u00a0Doesn’t seem to work…even for my own profile…

  • Zidaya

Not working for me. After clicking on Create a tree I always get this – see image

    • http://www.facebook.com/Zidaya Alexandr Klein

aha, I have to be logged in

  • http://www.facebook.com/Zidaya Alexandr Klein

    next try

    • Matt

Try it again, I think you got this because we ran out of disk space on our server.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Zidaya Alexandr Klein

Thank you, it works now, but there is problem with czech characters. Probably related to unicode issue.

  • tiffany

I think this will be an awesome feature when it actually works and you can actually find the correct profile id’s.u00a0 But until then I think it was a bit of a premature launch for those that would love to execute trees….u00a0

    • Matt

I agree, that’s why we have the “Beta” tag on the service. It’s not near the quality we’d like it to be. We didn’t want to prevent those who want to start using it now, so we released it as a beta.

There is serious problem with polish fonts. u00a0

  • Fred Liem

Could you please tell me how to make “the centre profile”‘s decendants chart? Thank you.

    • Matt

The service only supports ancestral charts at the moment. We’d like to support descendant charts soon.

  • Cobby54

u00a0Is this available as an iPhone4 App?

    • Matt

Not yet, We’d love someone to volunteer to write one though :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Zidaya Alexandr Klein

For these people having hard time to find the “history” link – look at the picture I provided… Don’t click on the history link, just hover over it and it shows the new ID in the small info box (lower left corner in FF4)u00a0

  • Matthew Hall

After having tried Tree Seek 2 months ago, I tried it again tonight only to find out that my previously created trees are gone and now I can’t create any new trees. Even knowing the correct profile id to use doesn’t help.nnI have tried in Firefox 5, Chrome 12 and Safari 5 in Windows with no luck. Maybe I’ll tomorrow on Mac…

Today, October 19, 2013, the site is timing out and not creating charts. We had a special activity planned in Springville, Utah for several ladies to make up charts. We have 3 computers going and in 1 1/2 hours have gotten only 2 charts. Is it just buy or what. The bottom of the screen says, “Waiting for Treeseek.com..” Help!
