Today, January 16, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the U.S. Observed on the third Monday of January each year, the holiday honors iconic civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. King was the leading activist for nonviolent protest against racial discrimination during the United States Civil Rights Movement. His leadership was fundamental to the movement’s success and inspired others to continue his work for many years to come. In 1964, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his advocacy of using nonviolent methods to end racial discrimination.
