Today’s Release: Notifications and More

Posted August 25, 2011 by Michelle | 107 Comments

Today we introduced some improvements to the site. Details and release notes are below.

Latest news box is back on the homepage. You can use this area to post updates to your family and followers.

latest news box

Notifications have been improved. You will now receive an email to notify you when someone starts a discussion about a profile you are following. In addition, the notification count in the header will reset to zero every time you check it. You’ll now only see a number if something has changed.

Burial location is now available for pros to edit on all unlocked public profiles. As fields become trackable in the revision history, they will be available for pros to edit.

Profile hovercards are available in more places. When you mouse over the names of immediate family on a profile, or in the compare profiles page during merges, the hovercard will appear. This should make confirming information about profiles prior to a merge easier.

Full Release Notes

Enhancements:

  • The latest news box has been added back to the homepage.
  • Adjusted birth surname default in the tree so that adding a husband to a female profile does not pre-populate the field.
  • Burial location is now editable on public profiles. Curators may lock this field on master profiles.
  • Email notifications are now sent when a new discussion is started on a profile you manage. If you do not wish to receive these notifications, you may update your notification settings.
  • Hovercards added to the compare profile page and the immediate family box on the profile page
  • Notification alerts now only show new notifications. The numbers will reset once you view the dropdown.

Fixes:

  • Updated maiden name to birth surname on in profile privacy settings.
  • Resolving data conflicts should not result in a newsfeed story if you choose all the values from the main profile column since nothing has changed.
  • Fixed county name replacing city name in location details.

Excellent – very happy to have the hovercards on the compare page.

  • Amadeus

Does anyone else notice that on the ‘revisions’ tab, that sometimes (all the time?) the things it says were changed were not the things that were actually changed?   For example, it might say I changed the ‘maiden name’, when in reality I changed the ‘birth date’.

I haven’t spent enough time to know if there is a pattern or if it’s just random occurrence, but I thought I’d mention it.

    • lance bradley

      Hi, Amadeus,
I’m responsible for what powers the revision history behind the scenes. I’m very interested in what you’ve seen, if you could email me any details- like what profile you saw this on, etc. I’ll investigate.
My email address is lance@geni.com . Thanks!

Yay! Especially like the change to birth names when adding a husband.

    • Dragonasbreath

would prefer to have the option as it is VERY useful to have the children automatically take the name of their father (or mother if that is how your country works).
It also needs to work both ways – if I discover a misspelling and correct it, this correction should run both ways thru the tree – asking if it is alright, of course!

How do I merge my geni family tree with “The Lally Club”, my family’s site on Facebook?  Kathleen Brodie

    • lance bradley

In short, you can’t- easily. I’m not sure if you want the Facebook stuff on Geni, or the the Geni stuff on Facebook, but either way, it’s not possible unless you save all of the photos and data from one site to your computer and manually add it to the other.

Good to hear…Latest news box is back

  • Wayne

I can no longer see the burial location in the profile for deceased individuals in my tree, unless I choose Edit Profile.  Since I am working on a project to update this data, the extra step is a big hassle.  Thanks.

    • Anonymous

The burial location is in the Timeline tab.

      • Wayne

Yes, which means I have to go hunting for it specifically, instead of having it visible directly in front me on the profile.  I do not like the change.

      • Wayne

Sorry to reply twice, but this is made even more un useful in the case of my family which is quite large.  I do not know the burial dates of most of the people, so it shows up at the bottom.  After many children.  Meaning not only do I have to click some other tab to find it, now I have to scroll to the bottom to see it.

This is not an improved UI experience.

        • Anonymous

Wayne, thanks for your feedback. I’ll pass it on.

          • Michelle

Burial location is back on the profile page.

        • Dragonasbreath

this is where that smart adding we were begging for comes in – burial location should immediatly follow death data, which should follow marriage data (it is not all that common for people to be married after they are dead. Not unheard of, but highly unusual),
Marriage info should come after naming info, and naming info should automatically come after birth info (birth, name, marry, die, bury).
Then, even if there are no dates attached, the DATA shows up in the right place.

          • Hope this helps

yeah, that has always bugged me.  One additional tweek, when an exact date is known for one event, and then only the year is known for a related event (specifically Birth then Naming/Baptism; or Death then Burial; or marriage then Divorce) that order of events should be preserved.  Often I can track only the the exact date of death but not the date of burial so put the year of burial in to be the same as year of death so they won’t get buried at the bottom of the timeline – but then I find that GENI has decided that Burial in “circa 1900″ comes before Death on July 1st, 1900.  As with your example, death usually precedes burial (but not always).

Likewise with baptism dates, for my English records I have a lot baptismal records that have a specific date, but only county records giving the year (or FreeBMD records giving quarter) of the birth.  MOST people aren’t baptized until After they are born.  And speaking of FreeBMD records, I’d love a way of entering the quarter in which a birth took place, but having some database development experience, I realize the kind of challenge that poses, so I’m not holding my breath.

Thanks for the feedback. These are some interesting points. I’ll make sure to bring it up. :-)

Thanks for catching that. We did not intend to remove burial location from the profile. We will get it back there right away.

  • Carlweston

Please put the burial location back on the profile page (it was moved to Timeline), and please put the “Requested Merges,  Tree Conflicts and Data Conflicts” back under Notifications.

Moving this stuff around causes multiple steps.  For example, Profile to Timeline (or edit) to see if you have burial info.  Or each time you update a data conflict, you must go from the Profile to Tree Matches, to Data Conflicts….thanks

  • Shirley Smith

These are great and the comment box on home page is a welcome sight but please let merges be like before. I know several merges in my tree that can’t be done because the manager is not a pro and the pro can’t merge so you have duplicates just dangling never to be corrected!! is this what you want your one world tree to look like or is this an Aspen Family tree? I also find it interesting that all vestiges of the Worlds largest free tree are almost all gone. How can you have an accurate tree if basic users can’t do their part to help out ? That’s like cutting off your arm and then asking it to stitch it back on!! This has been a great site until recently!!

    • Exagranat

I agree with you on the merge issues. Two non Pros cannot a merge make.

    • http://www.geni.com/people/Bradley-Zehr/6000000005404360326 Bradley Zehr

I have to agree with Shirley – this new policy of non-Pros not being able to merge is just going to result in unmerged duplicates all over the place — if there are no pros researching these family lines, how can they be educated enough on the facts to perform a merge?  This is sad…

    • Dragonasbreath

I have several hang-ups from a cousin who couldn’t find her way to her profile to claim it, started her own tree, and now sees no reason to merge what she did in with what the rest of the family has done.
and no way to correct the problem – I have my doubts that she has ever been back since she duplicated the tree in the first place.
Which is just another nod to Geni taking you straight to the ‘give me money’ screen rather than to where you should have ended up.

  • Appusha1948

Perhaps if Steve Jobs of the ipod, iphone, ipad fame is appointed as the CEO of Geni.com, the site could revert to it’s pre PROGeni days when the site was more user friendly.

Because Apple gives away a lot of stuff for free?  I don’t understand.

      • http://www.geni.com/people/Bradley-Zehr/6000000005404360326 Bradley Zehr

Ever on the profit trail, eh Geni George?

      • Edmond

I’m pretty sure Apple never lured in a large base of users by giving away some free stuff for a number years, then one day without notice said ‘Hey, we’re going to take that away from you guys, but if you leave the money on the table, you won’t get hurt.’

P.S. George, the snarky replies to criticisms are not improving your image as the Marketing Director, or whatever it is that you do, for Geni.com.

        • Milton

Apple promised free support for life at one time, then went back on the promise.

      • FLGibsonJr

No Facebook would have been the better model.

      • Unto Umpiluu

Did you Geni George get Gerni PRO for free? – Sounds like it.

  • Carlweston

Following  up on earlier comments, I now have dozens of stranded merges, that are either waiting on inactive users or non-pro users (often relatives) who can no longer merge.  Many are non-public profiles (Pro’s can’t complete those merges).  Is there a fix???

    • Niclas Carlenius

I asked before and still do not understand one thing: How does it now work to merge a private profile in one tree with a private profile in another tree? I understand pros cannot complete these merges themselves. I know from a previous blog reply that approval is required from managers or family on both sides (in both trees). But do both approvals have to come from pros (who are also managers or family), or can non-pros (basic free users) approve merges on private profiles?

      • Synnest

Normal users can’t start or approve any merges at all, if you have only one pro then its better to make these profile temporarily public.

  • Not4gettin

We have several adoptions in our family, some of which we have relationships with the birth/adoptive parents…we need a way to link these to one profile.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nina-Meyer/521768309 Nina Meyer

      YES!
Promised for years but nothing happening. Still the advise is “make the birth father the adoptive father’s brother . . . .
Too busy planning new economic gains!

As I said with Malou above this comment, it is possible, but it’s not an easy solution. We are currently developing a better solution.

  • Malou Tengström

Is it possible to add an adopted child´s adoptive parents and biological parents, i.e. two sets of parents?

    • Anonymous

Yes, it is possible in a kludge-y way, but we’re working on making it a much better experience.

      Short-term fix: http://help.geni.com/entries/471219-how-can-i-indicate-an-adoption-foster-parents-on-my-tree

  • Zvonko

Earlier version of Geni was better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dragonasbreath

so you are continuing to destroy what you originally built. And to take away what you promised would always be available.
You are also driving away all of your potential new members because all they see is a money-hungry pay site. News Flash – NOBODY is going to scroll all the way to the bottom of the ‘give me your credit card’ screen to see the ‘i don’t want to’ option. they are simply going to leave and write geni off as just another pay site.
Why am I here when I went to post in a profile?
Dump the hovercards, they are nothing but a pain in the _______. and we STILL cannot define relationships between children and parents – natural, adopted, step, foster…. giving multiple sets of parents with multiple relationships, can we?

    • Morrisinmortroux

You go to the ‘I don’t want to option’ click on it, try to do what you were trying to do, and guess what – back comes the pop up screen! ????

      • Anonymous

        Morris,

That is because you need to be a Pro member to accomplish the task you’re attempting to complete.

        • Nefie

You are missing the point! Geni only worked because of the generosity of non pro members spending countless hours because of the idea of being pat of something bigger.  Without that Geni will flop.  the only reason I still hang on is in the hope that it will change.  Someone is bound to see a business opportunity doming out of this.  Unfortunately Geni will be the looser!

  • Rrschiff

I agree with all the comments about the problem with mergers under Geni’s new policy.
I’ve suggested attracting advertising to raise money rather than putting thousands off Geni because they can’t merge anything unless they pay to become Pro!
Does Gen i want to destroy alli t’s built up?

    • Josielilywilliam

Even if you are a Geni Pro “Which I am” you can not complete the merge, with out the cooperation of the family member that add the extra profile information. and that family member is not allowed to merge any profiles.

  • Georges Teitler

I don’t know what that explanation in regards to Burial Details ought to mean. All I know that you change things from one day to the next without any prior warning! And mostly these changes are not one but ten steps back!! I have added hundreds of Burial details of people and had intended to then add photos of their grave stones, locating these people again in lists of their family name where it indicated the Burial details before. Now they are suddenly gone! How do I locate all these people again. Had I known of the changes, I had made a note of all the Burial sites. But now weeks of work is lost! Sometimes I could strange the GENI management! (And I’m a Pro and all the people were public portraits.  I EXPECT AN EXPLANATION – AND IT BETTER BE A GOOD ONE ¨¨

  • Dan Cornett

What I would like is to have hovercards on the “Family” column when possible tree matches … that’s where I find the best information about making the choice to say “no match” vs. “possible match” … but right know I have to go through several steps to view the parent, partner, children of the “contenders”.  Having hovercards on the names in that “Family” column would be a great timesaver (as well as potentially improving the merge choice accuracy).

  • frustrated

When are you going to get everything appearing vertically fixed?

  • FredLGibsonJr

Geni.  Wow what a disappointment.  I am shocked.  I had worked to get my family involved in building a historical tree for my family, and was getting great participation.  I just had recommended Geni to a distant cousin this weekend.  Now I see that Geni has changed the whole premise of this site, which in my view brings everything to a stop.  The ironic thing is that I was looking at the different payments for pro membership and was contemplating signing up for the annual membership, when I happened to start reading the new “enhancements” and was utterly floored.  Now being a pro member means nothing to me, because my participation depended on the free members in my family.  The real loss here however is trust, and that can’t be re-earned, even if you changed back I now cannot justify putting the time in here, and cannot with good conscience recommend this site to anybody, for who knows what the next new “enhancements” will bring.  This is one of the bigger disappointments that I have had in a product for a very long time, and my guess is that it may lead to the eventual end of this site.  Perhaps your business model is not working, but the direction you took is utterly wrong, perhaps a model similar to Facebook would have been better, but I am not sure how you recover from this.

    Regards,

    • Shirley Smith

Fred is absolutely correct and by what Geni has done has also devalued the geni pro status as well .Geni george if you read this there is no sugar coating this! This site is based on user participation! With out that you have nothing. My family tree is not going to fall out of thin air .I have to add it with the hopes some lost family member has added some link to the past. I would not mind a more facebook setting I always like this site better as it helps me keep in touch.

I have been thinking there is no real research done on this site! WE have to spend hours on other sites and looking at census and things like that! More people would do pro if you offer some research tools!

      • FLGibsonJr

Shirley, that is exactly right,  These changes devalue the pro status, and I know it makes people like me less likely to purchase that level.

        Regards,

    • Nefie

Please inform app.Appeal at about.com that Geni is no longer supporting a PERMANENTLY FREE VERSION.  I wonder what part of the word “permanently” the folks at Geni do not understand.  This is a breach of contract and you should be sued!
      Check the following on

      http://genealogy.about.com

where it still gives you a three star rating as follows:
      “Geni
AppAppeal gives Geni 3 stars out of 5. Geni has the following features: Support for Permanently free version. Support for English”.
HOW ABOUT THAT? CLEAR AND UNAMBITIOUS MISREPRESENTATION.

THIS IS A LOVELY OPPORTUNITY FOR A CLASS ACTION ON BEHALF OF MILLIONS OF NON PRO MEMBERS WHO SLAVED FOR ZILLIONS OF HOURS TO GET GENI WHERE IT IS.  ANY LAWYERS OUT THERE LISTENING

  • Lknisley

Geni, you have made this site a lot harder to navigate by removing the HOME button. I yearn for the good OLD GENI !!!

    • Anonymous

The Geni logo is the home button.

  • Philip Weiss

Well, we know Geni can do email notifications now. Still not going to go back to adding/editing anything until I can get email notifications when someone edits/merges a profile I manage/follow.

  • PA

With the recent changes, Geni has committed Genicide…

  • Zvonko

Just look the declining numbers of new profiles and katastrophy is visible.

  • Mona

What is the reason that I cann’t send Birthday greetings to my family?! Why I must be a Geni Pro member?!

  • Waiting to Profile

Hi Geni, maybe this is somewhere in an earlier update, but it appears I can no longer add relatives (parents, wives, children, siblings) to certain profiles – I’m re-directed to subscribe to Geni-Pro.  Is this an error, or are their new limits to how many profiles non-subscriber users can add to the Geni tree?  If it’s the latter, then I’m totally disappointed.  I have a very large tree and lots of documentation uploaded all of which I’m happy to share with paying members.  But I can’t understand the logic behind charging users to add to this tree.  I (and other non-paying users) aren’t going to sign up to add, which means no more additions from us.  This means less resources and information for paying subscribers to access.

I also agree with other posters here regarding merges.  Other users have requested the mergers of a number of my profiles which are NOT the same.  I cannot confirm that they are not the same (without paying for the privilege), and the original requester cannot eliminate them either because they are not paying subscribers.  So they just sit there pending for eternity.

Are there any plans to re-instate the access that non-paying users had when we signed up for Geni, or are they gone for good?

    • S_hoel

Of course Geni is not answering…

  • The_dessert_diva

I have been working on my family tree for five years with my couisn Paula.  Paula owns the membership and I add the information.  We have connceted out tree to relatives all over the globe.  When I attempt to access our family tree, I am redirected to Geni Pro.  Unnless I purchase a separate membership, I cannot add any information or edit.  I think we are done here.

    • Rrschiff

Consensus of opinion seems to be Geni has made a huge mistake in not allowing mergers to non pros

  • Morrisinmortroux

I have just tried to edit my stepdaughters birth date – it is incorrect – and I cannot even do this!!

    • Anonymous

Can you link to your profile and your step-daughter’s profile so I can look into this?

  • Ladydiane4

I tried to add a nephew to my uncle and couldn’t.

  • Zvonko

Please, tell me where to find new FREE family tree???

  • neil

My cousin and I have been updating our family tree for almost 3 years now and it’s over 6000 already. But recently, I cannot add more distant relatives and the Geni Pro always pops-up whenever I add family members of those distant relatives.

Having entered so many relatives, it’s quite discouraging to have this Geni Pro enforced to add more members. If profitability is main issue why Geni needs Geni Pro subscription, I think can always generate if from somewhere, like Advertisement in the Geni site.

Hope they reconsider re-instate the privileges to add distant relatives.

  • Coull

I’m having a problem with cousins who married. I entered their parents before realising that the parents were siblings. they are all long since deceased, but when i go to delete the parents ( with the intention of doing the cousin relationship first), Im told that they have claimed their profiles and I need their permission to delete them. There must be so many married cousins, why is it so hard to put right?

  • E.Karesky

Apparently under the “new and improved”(sic) Geni I can’t add something to Geni news anymore unless I pay for Geni pro.  My response is: Gay ack afen yam.  Those who understand this old Yiddishism know it means “go sh-t in the ocean.”

  • E.Karesky

I am disheatened and disappointed by the “new and improved”(sic) Geni.  I find that I can’t post news to the family newsletter unless I join Geni pros.  I will look elsewhere for a better program.

  • Dwhank

I bacame a pro member only to have some one of no relation take over my tree and the help line is a joke

  • Dwhank

I would not recomend thissite to anyone

    • Josielilywilliam

I love this site, it is a very good way to be connected to family members,  Geni is no different than Ancessary.com, You have to pay a monthly fee to be on that site. so if you have put a lot of time in working your tree, keep sending notes to Geni on correcting some of the problems that they have set, together we might make a difference.

  • Bende

As soon as I signed up for Geni Pro I noticed a number of my family tree photos were resized so that only an arm or some other part of the photo appeared.  I tried several times to correct this and seems ok for a short time, then reverts to partial photo again.  What am I doing wrong?

    • Nefie

Same thing is happening to some of the photo’s on profiles I posted even though I have decided against turning pro until a better deal is on the table.

  • Tiffy_d_s

Geni is becoming a disaapointment. Now that this stupid trial offer to go pro is around, geni wont let me add any new family members, free. I joined geni because it was free & i didnt have to go pro to add anything. Now it’s changing. I think i’ll go back to ancestry.com if geni doesnt fix this. If i dont want to go pro, i shouldnt have to. If i want to find tree matches, then yes I can see why the need to pay. but just to add family to keep track of everyone, it should not be mandatory!!!

  • Debbie Lawley

I have to add my support to the comments below. Please, please people at Geni – have a rethink. As a company Director I have to be well aware on the Internet about the importance of trust and the need to have complete clarity about what you can charge for and what you cannot. You cannot charge for data willingly added by contributors. You can charge for databases that are owned by professional organisations that you serve up well. You can have free access to entry level systems and charge for extra facilities but woe betide the company that gets the line wrong here. You still have an enthusiatic if bruised set of contributers. The best thing you could do right now is to listen to them and make that change back.If you do not, you are all set to lose your most valuable asset.

  • Ken

I would have thought that the logical commercial way to handle this approach would be to apply the new restrictions to new members from this point, leaving existing members as they are.

The new members would know exactly what they get, with no subterfuge, and the existing members would not feel betrayed, as they do now.

    • Josielilywilliam

I can agree with parts of all comments. I sign for Geni Pro 3 years ago, it have not allowed me to marge profiles that other family members come on and reproduced later, I have had to block family members use of my tree so I can keep it looking like I first started it. I don’t know that Geni can solve all the problems that come with getting family to take a POSITIVE active part in building a tree, some members of my family become compatitive, and set out to make changes unneededly. but at the same time, my Pro membership do not allow me to make corrections. Sooo! What do we do, the family member want make corrections tree and the Pro member can;t correct it. So I feel very betrayed, but not sure if Geni can fix it or not, when it is the new family member that is invited on that creates the problems.

  • K Rowell

I thought for a while that this might be a good site, however, recent modifications/”enhancements” have helped me decide to move on to a different alternative and not sign up for the Pro level.

  • E.Karesky

I am so disappointed with what has become of Geni.  I will not renew my pro-level membership.

  • Brid Harrisgm

I loaded documents and photos with no difficulty before.  Now I get rubbish when I try to load documents and it just hangs when I try to load photos.

When a PRO believes that a profile managed by me is the same as one managed by the “Pro” and the profiles have different parents, spouses, birthdates…the Pro should not be requesting they be merged.  I should have the ability to say “NO, they are different”  The idea that you have to be PRO to know if they are the same is BS.  Paying to be PRO does not give anyone sudden increased knowledge about genealogy.   As the saying goes ” Three days ago I cudnt spell proe, a hunerd dollers later, I are one”

  • Exagranat

I noticed my site showed notification of two profiles that might be the same. When I clicked on the fact thaty theyn were then same, the screen changed to the “Upgrade to Geni PRO.”  I couldn’t do anything about the duplication. Why show it to me if I cannot do anything about it. How totally frustrating!

  • Josielilywilliam

With yor all things new I lost my personal profile and the one of my doughter that pass away, these profiles mean a lot to me and I wish you would update my tree with all profiles of family that took the time to post on my family site.

UNDER CHILDHOOD MEMORY, I WANT TO NARRATE AN INCIDENT AND TO UNDERSTAND THAT FULLY,THE READER SHOULD KNOW THE LOCATION OF MY RESIDENCE AT THAT TIME.
GENI ACCEPTS ONLY NARRATION AND NOT SKETCH; NOW WHAT TO DO; HOW TO ADD SKETCH  OR DRAWING? I HAVE SENT A E-MAIL TO help@geni.com. BUT SO FAR NO REPLY.

    • Waiting to Profile

How about drawing it on a word processor (Word) or other programme, or drawing it freehand and scanning it onto your computer.  You could then attach it as a ‘source’ document.

This has gotten totally out of hand.

Not only are Pro’s changing information incorrectly en masse, there’s no way of knowing what the information used to be. The revisions option just shows green blank boxes for the birth/death/burial dates, which are now wrong.

I also note that a person noted as a ‘volunteer curator’ is changing the privacy settings from Private to Public – in entire branches of the tree. So much for privacy considerations.

I suspect that ‘volunteer curators’ have been hauled aboard to complete the astonishing numbers of merges that cannot otherwise be completed under the new rules.

Having the blog is great for venting frustration. It is apparent, though, that the Geni people are not making any comments or answering us using this blog. Perhaps they’ve been struck by Geni-cide. Can anyone tell me if there is anothersimilar genealogy website. If so, is there a way to move all our hard work from Geni to a more honorable site?

      1. Click on FAMILY at the top of the Geni screen
      2. Select SHARE YOUR TREE
      3. Select EXPORT FOREST option (to include your 100,000 nearest relatives)
      4. Click on the EXPORT bar to start the file creationThis takes 24/48 hours. Geni will send you an email when the file is ready – you don’t need to stay online. The only things that didn’t get included for me were non-regular events (birth, marriage etc. were okay) 5. The file is zipped. You will need to unzip it before you can use it.6. Most family tree sites will accept this file as input. It’s worth having on your PC as backup, even if you’re not moving sites.

Here is an option, not exactly the same as Geni, but they are committed to being free through advertising and not through membership premiums:  http://www.wikitree.com/

I found out about this website through Reader’s Digest’s Sept 2011 issue which says “this free site will help you discover unknown relatives.”  I am disappointed to discover that it is not free.  Any remedy to this misleading “advertising”?

I added photos to people “under my control.” I went to crop them so only one person shows for each of my people. It briefly shows the cropped photo and then reverts to the original. How can I fix this?

Geni has released monsters!  I checked “revisions” today and find people making changes on profiles that I manage.  Suddenly “William Banks” has 3 wives…all named Elizabeth!  Just because you can afford $300 doesn’t necessarily say that you have any idea what you are doing!
“Pro’s” are systematically destroying my tree.
    WAY TO GO, GENI!!!!!!!!

    • Ken

Geni has stated that there are no managers anymore – the concept has gone.

      • Ladydiane4

Apparently “William Banks” has too many managers!

What?!?  OMG.  Is this an attempt to force users to upgrade to PRO in order to protect the integrity of the trees we have all built?  If we don’t a PRO member can actually go in and change the information in our trees?

Just because someone is PRO doesn’t mean that they spend as much time researching and checking to ensure that they’ve identified the right people. There is a lot of wrong information out there in some trees.

I’m really glad that I downloaded my GEDCom a couple of weeks ago.  And am now trying to find an alternate option for my data.  I keep checking Geni in hopes that it will change it’s mind about these changes.  If not, then I plan to delete my entire tree (or at least the profiles it allows me to delete).

I have no much use for all the “improvements” as long as old bugs have not been
solved like me being unable to manage the people I introduced into Geni.  I cannot merge
profiles but am being harassed by Pro users to allow them to merge “my” profiles and other things I have mentioned before. I am totally unhappy with Geni.
