am researching James Mulvey (b. 1853 - ?) and his wife Lily/Lilllie (1870 - ?)who show up in the 1900 US Census as coming from Ireland to Denver, Colorado. Also Lily's second husband Michael Gallagher.

by looking at the origional census record on "familysearch.org" the extra helpful data that can be gleaned are
year of emmigration 1866 (might be worth looking at ships manifests for that year)
Married 7 yrs ( so a look at marriage records for year 1893 might give more info)
james was a "carpenter" & was 33 yrs in USA ,was an USA citizen in 1900.
Lilly was 11 years in USA and year of emmigration was 1889.

Dirk, did you try the passenger record database on www.ellisisland.org and www.Castlegarden.org?
You can find more links here: http://www.geni.com/discussions/101805

Annemarie,

I have tried the Ellis Island database without success. Thank you for the other websites. I will look at them and see if I can get any more clues. :-)

Rootsireland gives a lot of results, too many really, as John suggested if you can first check if they maybe married in 1893 USA and obtain a marriage record, it will give the name of the parents in Ireland and maybe even the place of birth.

www.rootsireland.ie results:

Church Baptism Mulvey James 1854 Co. Leitrim
Church Baptism Mulvey James 1852 Co. Longford
Church Baptism Mulvey James 1855 Co. Waterford

NOTE by John Duane :- two conflicting detail in this record
(and i believe this is the same James Mulvey)
give date of birth as 1861 not 1853 and year of immigration as 1864 not 1866.
year of immigration one is not too much of a discrepancy 1864-1866 ONLY 2YRS.
DATE OF BIRTH changes all searches to date 1853-1861 8yrs is a lot and it also would mean that he emmigrated as a child aged 3yrs so parents should also show up in any ships manifest etc.if 1861 is correct !
