Michael Stangel If I look on the Overview tab of my profile, in the list of Statistics, I see Following 30,214. But if I go to the Activity tab it shows Following 12 of 31,825. So which is correct? 30,214 or 31,825?

I have no idea how I got to be following so many. Perhaps it has to do with how many I have added by hand and those are automatically followed?

The correct number is 31,835. I've updated your stats. (It's cached for 30 days, so it's possible 30,214 was correct a month ago)

6/12/2012 at 11:55 AM

Oh and yes, every profile you create or are made manager of, you automatically follow.

6/12/2012 at 6:22 PM

Thanks. Makes sense now. Except not ever managed profile is followed, if the stats are correct. And I'm not sure how Fred Bergman got to 92,755 followed, since he's only added 22,126 (and manages 157,510). Any theories?

Mike, wasn't that implemented relatively recently? I don't think we were automatically following profiles we created until maybe within the past year or so. That might be part of the discrepancy.

7/16/2012 at 4:19 PM

Yes, July 2011.

7/17/2012 at 5:45 AM

It would be nice to have an automatic follow on every profile you edit/revise too.

Is there a way to run a script so I am following all of my managed profiles?

8/16/2012 at 12:22 PM

Yes, that's not too hard. I'm running it now -- will let you know when it's done.

8/16/2012 at 2:11 PM

Thanks Mike. Have to admit I don't know what the difference will be in terms of function -- i.e. notifications/news feed, do they differ for managed vs. followed? In any case, thank you.

8/16/2012 at 2:33 PM

We're trying to move newsfeed notification to following instead of manager -- one of the steps in de-prioritizing management of historical profiles.

8/16/2012 at 3:03 PM

Ok, so it's good that you are running that script for me. Thanks.

8/16/2012 at 4:25 PM

Michael Stangel, did you run the script for all or just for Randy? Because I would like for me to, since all my family was introduced before «followers» are implemented.

8/16/2012 at 4:26 PM

*to = too

8/16/2012 at 5:05 PM

Perhaps the people who manage a ton of profiles might not want follow all of them, so I suppose Mike should do this on a case by case basis.

8/16/2012 at 5:18 PM

Done for both Randy and Lúcia.

8/16/2012 at 5:59 PM

Thanks Mike. Will my stats will get updated eventually to show the new following number also? Mine are still showing the old 35, 572 number. Thanks again.

8/16/2012 at 7:44 PM

Tks Mike!

Michael Stangel My counter still doesn't reflect the new following figure so I can't tell if it worked, but I think it did. When does the counter get reset?

8/21/2012 at 11:14 AM

Randy I've updated your stats for the following count (yours too, Lúcia).

8/21/2012 at 1:01 PM

Wow, now it is 102,652. I did not expect that. I wonder why it is so much more than my managed profiles.

8/21/2012 at 1:22 PM

I'll send you a private message with a small sample of profiles that you follow but do not manage.

8/21/2012 at 1:29 PM

Oh it's because 87k is the count of profiles on which you're the primary manager. I set you to follow those and also the profiles on which you're a manager but not the primary.

8/21/2012 at 2:17 PM

Michael Stangel, would you do the same for me? I've been fighting it, but the last few days I've focused specifically on noticing the benefits of following, and I'm realizing I was wrong to resist it ;)

Michael Stangel
Can you do it for me please

Oh dear I follow 11K but manage 15K, how did that happen. Update me please Mike.

8/21/2012 at 7:46 PM

Thanks. i did not know that the managing figure only included primary management. Is there a reason for that? Not that it matters too much, just curious why you would want just the primary management figure and not the total number of managed profiles. Thanks again, Randy

Jadra and Erica are done... doing Justin's now.

8/22/2012 at 10:03 AM

Randy, I'm not really sure... I think initially it was more efficient to calculate just primary management, but that problem has since been solved. We could do it either way... I'd defer to the product team on the decision of which number to show.
