Is this THE General Thomas Sumter? If so, when and where and why the spelling change?

Like this person Brig. General Thomas Sumter ("The Carolina Gamecock")?

The birth day is one month off, and I doubt that his first name was General either.

Yes, this is THE General. As far as the spelling of the surname, it changed in documents. Documents a generation or two after General Sumter had the "p" put into the name. These documents were government document/legal documents, etc. you will find this change on some, but not all documents.
I know the folks at Fort Sumter are very, very adamant that the General's name is spelled without a P. So, Jami, it's not your mother's fault that she spelled her name with a P, it happened generations ago.
Our family line comes down from the General's brother, Capt. William.

Very very fascinating. My husband and I want to plan a vacation there sometime.
