Finally tracked down the missing link. Will send for the marriage certificate to see what this might show.

Henry Deacon - Elizabeth Deacon's first husband was alive in 1872 at the birth of Henry James Deacon as shown on his birth certificate.
What happened to him?
Did he die? (he was born in 1839 - so in his 30's)
Did they divorce?
Something to investigate further.
