Known as "Thomas" in military, tax, and census records. Born 16 Jul 1763 in Hanover county Pennsylvania to John Thomas Coppenhaver, Sr. and Catherine Mosser. The family moved to southwest Virginia in the 1780s during the Revolutionary War following John Thomas Coppenhaver, senior's service in the Pennsylvania militia. The Revolutionary War service of Thomas as a teenager in the Virginia militia is documented in his pension application file R-2311. The pension application was rejected since he served less than the 6 months required for a pension. Thomas married Barbara Staley about 1785 in Virginia. They had at least two daughters, Catherine Mary and Elizabeth; and at least seven sons; John, Martin Staley, Joseph, Valentine, Abraham, Peter, and Jacob. Most of the family moved to Lincoln county Missouri in the 1830s where Thomas and Barbara died in the late 1830s.
