One approach might be to find other people with similar background and travel with them.
FYI...my in-laws are originally from Romania, speak the local language, and travelled there about a year or two ago. They visited cemetaries in communities like Iasi that they knew from growing up, to do exactly what you describe. Maybe find travel agents who specialize in trips to Romania / Transylvania...perhaps they can co-ordinate a trip of like minded persons to visit sites.
