Larsson / Westerdahl name convergence?

My ancestors changed their surnaming convention in the 1850's. Dads name was Johanned Larsson, and of the 4 children, 2 kept Larsson surname, and 2 took up Westerdahl. Kornelius seemed to do the same here.

Was this a common thing in this decade?
