Jacob's dad Meyer wanted him and his brother to become rabbis, but neither of them wanted to. He gave them an extensive and thorough religious education and then finally conceded to their wishes to study art. Meyer apprenticed both boys to artists. Jacob chose portraits and character painting;Ike chose landscapes and lettering. They apprenticed for many years.

BTW the source of the above story comes from a letter written by Ike's grandaughter Ruth Slutzky.
