Annemarie... question on the project description.

Old style naming conventions...how old are we talking here? 1800's? 1600's? 1100's?

i have noticed my family names repeating, but am not sure yet they fit the pattern you described.

Thanks.

The naming never changed trough the centuries, only now the last 30 /40 years with more modern names coming in it is changing a small bit
It was deffinately the case in late 1600, and troughout 1700, 1800 and 1900's

In South Africa the same convention was used and is quite often still in use today. Boys will almost always have a grandfather's name, quite often shortened or somewhat changed, Jacobus would become Jacques or Jaco, with girls 'fancy' fasionable names are quite often given today.

I am looking for information about Thomas Peter McDonald who arrive at the Cape early in the 1800's. He was the son of Dennis McDonald and Mary Brownlee and was born in County Tipperary in the late 1700's. Wher do i begin?
