I realized that I live in a fantastic place to look for sources. I was looking for a portrait of Elizabeth "Betsy" Lee and found this set of material which is just down the street from me!

http://www.alexandria.lib.va.us/lhsc_online_collection_guides/archi...

Also - could someone help look for a suitable image for Elizabeth Lee Howson? The image that is there now is not appropriate.

I have only started adding sources and links - have been primarily fixing the data - will tidy things up after I get the first gen squared and MP'd through you - thanks.

I would prefer a map of Virginia from that era to the current image. If that would work for you all, I'll see what I can find.

4/23/2011 at 5:39 PM

Maria - there has been a bit of sabotage done this morning on the project so we are unable to advance at this time til the situation is dealt with. I believe I have a map somewhere I can forward to you via email of early Virginia and the Colonies if that is what you are looking for?

This is a picture of Stratford Hall, one of Richard Lee's plantations.

This is Cobbs Hall, home of some of the early Lees in Virginia. Cobbs Hall Cemetery is less than a mile away, in a garden. Richard Lee I is buried there with his wife Anne. There is a Cobbs Hall chapter of the DAR in Lancaster Co., VA, which used to be Northumberland Co.

I thought that while you're working on tidying up the data, I can start working on uploading documents to profiles. So if you have any links, post them here. If not, I'll send you my email address if you have anything in jpeg, pdf format you can email.

I wonder if you and your wife are interested in taking some original photographs of Lee associated places for the project / profiles?

Erica - Good morning! I think that I can speak for Rusty and say yes! We are close enough..and she is really interested in the Lee's! Also, you hit a right button, she is a semi-professional photographer (cost me a mint), but she is very good...and very detailed. Are there any specific types of pics you are looking for?

Erica - Additionally, Hatte indicated that you are manager for the first settlers of Hartford...she is going to add me to the project...as you probably already know, the Olmsteads and Mosby's have lots of links to the Hartford area..as well as other branches of my tree..so I will be glad to participate and provide what I can!

I'll get down to the Lee-Fenell house in the next week or so Erica. I have a decent camera. Nothing to match Pam or James' wife. And maybe when my daughter is here, I'll have her help. She's a trained photographer / cinematographer.

Mary Ann Lee was born in Johnston County, NC, March 20, 1822 and
was the first child of Thomas Lee and Elizabeth Allen Lee. Mary
Ann was born less that two months after the marriage of her
parents. With both parents being from respected families in
the community, the reason for the marriage is obvious.
Mary Ann married Kinion Eden Barefoot, October 25, 1854. She
may possibly have married a near cousin since Kinion's mother is
Meady Allen and problably related to Elizabeth Allen Lee.

In 1863, Kinion Barefoot, Sr. volunteered for services in the
Confederate Army and was "present and accounted for" through
December 1864, but when parolled on April 15, 1865, he was
listed as "Deserted." One can only surmise what happened
during the period he was to be on active duty with all the
confusion and chaos caused by Generals Sherman and Stoneman
running the length and breadty of North Carolina. Because of
the constant skirmishes and retreats, many men were seperated
from their units and unable to rejoin them so they rejoined
other units or simply went home in despair. Not knowing the
whereabouts of these men, the Army often listed these men as
having deserted.

Hello Jim,
Thanks for the quick response.

Sabray Lee - John Green
Esther Green - Richard Chaddick
Jesse Young - Sarah Chaddick
Christopher Young - Frances Parker
Enoch Young - Viola Losper
Louise Young - Samuel Haile

Jim Fox == me
Looks like eight (8) links between John Lee Esq. and me.
But my math is not good enough to nail down our relationship, I fear!
I do feel better knowing that you spent so much time on it and are satisfied.
I know that "Ansearchin News" is a magazine relating to Tennessee Genealogy
But what is Log Cabin to Whitehouse?
I appreciate the tip about the book about John Lee Esq.Not sure what you mean
about the missing children...
Thanks again,
Jim

-----------------------------------************************
Edmund Jennings Lee had not found any record of what happened to one son William Lee and
blew it off finally saying he appears to have died young.
Weelllll sort of.
He did die earlier, 1694-5, than other siblings, leaving a 18 year old daughter and three younger
minor sons. The daughter Mary had married William Heath at age 15 had two sons, Thomas and
Samuel the last being born after his father died. She re married to Bartholomew Schriever who is
the villain of this story. He was “of age” so grabbed the estate and paid out yearly “ a gentleman’s
living” to the three boys; Wm, John, and Richard. What he paid was far less than the estate could
manage; and they deserved more; but it was legally large enough that they could not sue their
“guardian” until ALL of them were of age. The instant the youngest turned 21 they did sue.
BUT
Not in probate court but common pleas court to recover their inheritance.
And not in the original county (Westmoreland) but the county had been split and then re-split in the
mean time (at this time it was Surry Co) and worse the judge (a VIP ) did not travel to them he
stayed put and they had to come to him in King and Queen County. (This was a MAJOR estate
-and why they had a “superior” judge in a higher court- in today’s terms it would be multi millionaire
stuff).
AND
It was 7-8 years out of time…7 -8 years later than expected.
Wrong place, wrong time, wrong court, and why E J Lee missed it.
Bart and Mary got her furniture and what money he had sequestered (the court knew he had
milked estate, said so, but did not bother to try to find where he had squirreled money
away--{Bermuda}), just gave Mary HER furniture, and kicked them off land and divided it 3 ways
each boy getting roughly 1/3. Bart packed up in high dudgeon and went back to England (assume
they stopped at Bermuda where $$ were) - and lived life of rich ex colonial gentleman.
OK first problem solved. This I got from two separate books /people who had done work
independently, and I cross-checked just to be sure. (A Weavin' and Log Cabin to White House
Next problem
William (ii) son Wm (i) and grandson of Co Richard died 1717 (about 13 years after court bruhoo);
leaving 4 sons. And I will stick to our line his son Charles b 1706 moved to new land at North
Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., Va.
Charles moves again dies 1799 at-really near just out of town- Leesburg, Cumberland Co., Va.
leaving cash to a son William (others got land) and just down the road, land adjoining Charles is a
William Lee that the previous genealogists had assumed was his son.
BooBoo!
It was a reasonable assumption. Just wrong. Charles died in 1799 Cumberland Co Va and had a
son William. There is a William Lee (md Ave Noel) whose land adjoins Charles’ land so they
assume he is the son. Unfortunately they happened to buy adjoining lands at about the same time
and they were cousins, but unwarranted assumption as to being his son.
Then I found the full name of James Garnett Early Lee b. 23 feb 1777 known as Garnett Lee
usually, AND known to be son of William and Ave Noel and that triggered my memory that James
Lee had md Mary Clark Garnett and I cross connected Wm and Ave to James Lee and Mary
Garnett who also had known son William but unknown what happened to him if we connect Wm
and Ave to Charles. To add to the surety I was right, Wm and Ave moved about 1788 to Evington
Road Bedford Co Va. just a bit down the road from James and Mary Garnett -- (Ah Ha!)----- so this
time making the assumption that the William who was close to James was his son works. James
died by the way 1791 Probate Bedford Co Va.
With that I was able to disconnect he wrong William (md Ave) and get him to correct papa- and so
was left connecting MY William (1738-1808) to Charles. Reason for cash was my William had gone
on to Hardy Co Va. (now West Va) at the same time, abt 1760, his father Charles had moved from
Richmond Co where he was born (The residual of the original estate was now in Surry Co.-but had
been split up so much the land left to Charles was too small to make him well off - or as well off as
he wished) then on to Leesburgh in Cumberland Co and so our William had no use for land- he
had his own- but hundreds of miles away. SO cash.
Oh me oh my long story. I also jumped 4 years work in getting all of the above. I followed Loads of

Today I am tracking Alice Felton, I have found nothing on her in Virginia, and if she had married
Thomas Felton she would have been 7 years old.
From what I have found below she must have came to Virginia as a servant met William Lee (the
rogue that he was) and married him. Still found nothing on marriage though.
I have been doing census on Williams’ and Richards’ (Tax list) (census)
WM would have to be in Maryland; that is where his father left him a home and land. I found Col
Richard Lee’s will he made in England when he and his family were in their home there, he went to
sell all and give up England for good. He had made many trips back and forth over the years and
owned 1/8 of 3 ships for transporting goods back and forth and people.
Francis Lee went back to England lived, raised his family and died there in 1714.
Col Lee left the ownership of the 3 ships to (Elizabeth-Mary-& Susan 1/8th eh.) to Francis and if he
dies first it goes to Charles and the two sisters, Elizabeth and Ann.
Jim, how do I go about getting Edmond Jennings Lee’s book?
Did you find anything in there on Alice?
Talk to you two later

I have been following this exchange for a while now. We have discussed
this family several times in this Forum, and I have been compiling information
regarding it, as John, the brother of Peter Lee, may be my umpteenth great
grandfather. Included here is my current file. This information comes from
numerous sources and may be in part inaccurate, so use it at your own risk.
Nonetheless, there's a lot of good data here and some hints for more. Ignore the
"Impossible" and other tags on the John Lees - that's just my notes.

This was a poor family, apparently either not related or distantly related to the Lees
of Stratford Hall. Barbara Vernon notes that Hannah Lee, of the same generation
would have been likely to hire a relative as overseer. This implies that there was a
relationship between Hannah Lee and Justice Thomas Barber, for whom William
became a plantation overseer in Lunenberg Parish in the 1740's. William was
charged with the felony death of a slave, but apparently not convicted. The
Richmond County Criminal Court minutes for May 18, 1743, give an almost
verbatim account of testimony concerning the incident. He appears in Richmond
Co, VA in the 1740's and 1750's, specifically in the North Farnham Parish. Late in
life, he was poverty-stricken and jailed as a debtor.

Pvt VA, Revolutionary War patriot. John Lee's few short years in Nelson Co, VA
(formed in 1785) were inauspicious from the beginning. When he settled along the
Rolling Fork the region was inhospitable. Indian attacks were frequent and the
newly-arriving burdened frontiersmen often sought protection in stockaded Goodin's
Fort two miles to the north. In 1782 the peril was so great that a sentry guarded the
cabins by night and the fields by day. John Lee served in the autumn of 1782 under
Col. Isaac Cox in General George Rogers Clark's expedition against the Shawnee
in southern Ohio. He probably rendered other military service as every ablebodied
man was needed in the militia for defense against sporadic Indian attack until the
late 1780s. Despite his courageous struggle to establish a home on his own land,
John Lee's dream did not come true. A clear title was not forthcoming during his
lifetime to either of two tracts he attempted to acquire. He took possession of a
400-acre tract south of New Haven that was allotted to him December 3, 1781, with
the provision that full payment be made within two and a half years, but Joseph
Barnett steadfastly refused to relinquish a prior claim. In February 1787, John Lee
sold 150 of the 400 acres on which he was living, received cash payment and
granted possession although a deed of transfer could not be drawn up. It was
apparently at this time that he bought 86 acres on the Beech Fork about four miles
to the north, with the assurance of clear title. Nevertheless, the deed to the latter
tract was not recorded until five years after his death. These were the unfortunate
circumstances that denied John Lee the longed-for security of outright land
ownership, the goal of every settler. John Lee died in the summer of 1788.
Elizabeth, the widow, was left with seven children ranging in age from sixteen to a
toddling infant. Daughter Eleanor, the oldest child, had married the previous year,
and Wilford, the oldest son, was fourteen. The 400 acres of virgin soil had provided
a livelihood during the family's occupancy and a small amount of movable property
had been accumulated. Widow Elizabeth Lee was appointed executor of the estate
August 12, 1788. The inventory made April 13, 1790, listed one slave, about twenty
head of livestock, household goods and farming implements at a total value of a
trifle over 105 pounds.

Served in Dunmore's War and during the American Revolution served in the Militia

Michael Cresap). He migrated to Mercer and Nelson Counties in KY with Peter and
William Lee, brothers. Also, sister "Nanny" Ann Lee and Joseph Hanks were there
about the same time. Records in LA show that Peter and Mark made entries for
land grants after 1790. Vol. III American State Paper, "Before Richard Cocke 1809

that Mark Lee resided on land claimed 1797-1801. Mark Lee was then head of a

On 23 Feb 1790, Don Carlos de Grand Pre noted that a flatboat from KY had
arrived in the Natchez District from the USA. One John Lee was a boatman in the
employ of Mark Lee, who had descended the river with two flatboats, bringing a

New Research on the Wraysbury Deeds
by Alan Nicholls.
In 1999 I gave a presentation to the Lee Society of Virginia at their AGM concerning the English
ancestry of Colonel Richard Lee, the founder of the Virginia Lee family. This presentation was
placed on my webpage on 24th May 1999.
In that presentation I included evidence that Colonel Richard Lee had signed a series of three
indentures relating to a purchase by John Lee of Coton of a property at Wraysbury in
Buckinghamshire, England in 1652. Colonel Richard's signature on these deeds had been used by
all previous researchers, with other evidence, to show a direct connection between the Lee family
of Virginia and the Coton Lee family of Alveley, Shropshire. However since the 1999 presentation
my research has revealed evidence using only original contemporary documents that these
indentures were in fact signed by Richard Lee, fishmonger, son of Lancelot Lee of Coton. This
Richard was the apprentice of John Lee, fishmonger, citizen of London and gentleman. I have
shown previously that this John Lee (1600-1682), son of Thomas Lee of Coton (1560-1620) was
mistakenly identified as a saddler by all earlier researchers.
As I reported in the 1999 presentation the signatures on the Wraysbury deeds seemed to match
extremely well with those few other original signatures of Colonel Richard Lee that I had found. He
signed himself Rich: Lee in all cases and I found these signatures the most persuasive evidence to
authenticate his claim to a Coton ancestry. However this new evidence has overturned those
conclusions. The new research is detailed below.
The research undertaken since the 1999 presentation has not found the English ancestor of
Colonel Richard Lee but it is challenging the fundamental assumptions made by earlier
researchers. I am continuing to follow my lines of research and hopefully will carry it through to a
successful conclusion. I will post articles on my webpage as I complete each phase of the
research. As with all research of this nature there are gains and losses but I view each reversal
with a positive attitude that will propel me forward with new knowledge to more gains and,
hopefully, less losses.

Jim,
I have not done English research on Richard and Henry Lee of York. They were obviously related,
probably brothers. Since Richard was born c. 1619, and appears to have been the older, it would
appear that Henry was born c. 1620. Since his first child was b. 1645, this fits well.
There were several Richard Lees and several Henry Lees on the early emigration records. To my
knowledge, no one has proven whence they came or which county they settled in.
The first problem in research is that there is no proof that Richard Lee of York was the same
person as Col. Richard.
The research that has been done has been aimed at the origin of Col. Richard Lee. Two of the
most recognized articles are: Article by Wm. Thorndale, National Genealogical Society Qtrly, Dec
1988
Article by Ludwell Lee Montague, Va. Magazine, Jan. 1954.
The descendants of Col. Richard have not enthusiastically accepted any of the research done. One
of them has recently engaged an English researcher, Alan Nicholls. Nicholls has a web page which
you can Google up.
Hope this helps. Will send another message on the Henry Lee descendants.

Today I am tracking Alice Felton, I have found nothing on her in Virginia, and if she
had married Thomas Felton she would have been 7 years old.
From what I have found below she must have came to Virginia as a servant met
William Lee (the rogue that he was) and married him. Still found nothing on
marriage though.
I have been doing census on Williams’ and Richards’ (Tax list) (census)
WM would have to be in Maryland; that is where his father left him a home and
land. I found Col Richard Lee’s will he made in England when he and his family
were in their home there, he went to sell all and give up England for good. He had
made many trips back and forth over the years and owned 1/8 of 3 ships for
transporting goods back and forth and people.
Francis Lee went back to England lived, raised his family and died there in 1714.
Col Lee left the ownership of the 3 ships to (Elizabeth-Mary-& Susan 1/8th eh.) to
Francis and if he dies first it goes to Charles and the two sisters, Elizabeth and Ann.
Jim, how do I go about getting Edmond Jennings Lee’s book?
Did you find anything in there on Alice?
Talk to you two later
