About Cecil Blount Demille

Cecil Blount Demille, known as Cecil B. DeMille, was a pioneering film director - in both silent and sound movies. Starting in 1913, he became a dominant force in the Hollywood film industry for 40 years. He produced or directed about 80 movies - including The Ten Commandments (1956), a movie in the 'epic' genre for which he is probably best known today. His movies collected 13 oscars. In 1952, he received the first Golden Globe award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures; this annual award is now named after him.

The genealogy perspective

Cecil B. DeMille's family came to America in 1658. The American progenitor was Anthony Demil, born in 1625 in Sint Anthonis - in the current Dutch province Noord Brabant. However, in about 1554, Anthony's grandfather Antonis Laurensz Demil was born in Sint-Lievens-Esse - in the current Belgian province of Oost-Vlaanderen (East Flanders). From there, the Demil family is currently tracked on Geni to Gillie DeMil, born around 1280.
