Redbird Sixkiller was born in the Cherokee Nation East in Georgia. In 1837, he and his wife, Pamelia Whaley, were informed that they were to be forcibly removed from Georgia and relocated to the Indian Territory, west of the Mississippi River. The Indian Removal has become known as The Trail of Tears.
Redbird and his wife arrived in Goingsnake District of Indian Territory in the spring of 1838. They settled near the present day village of Westville, Oklahoma, where they raised a family of eight, five boys and three girls.
1st Lt. Redbird Sixkiller commanded a Union Indian artillery company during the Civil War. He served from July 1862 until May 1864 and fought in the battles of Newtonia, Missouri; Cain Hill; and Prairie Grove. His son, Samuel, served as an enlisted man in his unit.
After the war, he was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation.
