Irma's first husband, Emmanuel Joachim Etie, was from the families of Brou, Toupard, Borel, Etie, and Baudoin, most of whom were French soldiers who settled on the Mississippi River in LA in the first half of the eighteenth century. He was also descended from the Miguez, Diaz, Dominguez, Delgado, and Guerrero families, who were Spanish immigrants to LA in the eighteenth century. Their histories began as agriculturists and cattlemen, but by the fifth generation, some had moved to more urban pursuits. Emmanuel was engaged in the practice of law when he married Irma. He served as Mayor of New Iberia in 1868 and as the first judge of Iberia parish when it was created in 1868. They had nine children, seven of which were living in 1870 when their father died. Irma then married William Fisher and spent her last years in Galveston, TX.
