Abijah Buttles and Augustus Stoughton, the grandfathers of A. W. Buttles, were soldiers in the Revolutionary War; the former crossed the Delaware River on the night of December 25, 1776, with General Washington's wing of the army, and assisted in the capture of the Hessians, one of whom he made prisoner and led him up to his captain, when the Hessian drew from his pocket a bottle of New England rum and the three took a sociable drink together.
