About Abraham Brown, Sr.

Abraham BROWN - b. Aug. 26, 1671, Watertown, MA; d. Nov. 27, 1729, Watertown, MA; bur. at Watertown Burying Ground [photo], west of Watertown, MA. Son of Jonathan BROWNE and Mary SHATTUCK. Inherited family home at Watertown, to which he made 'new' additions to the older portion that his son Samuel occupied. Photos have been taken of the home, the neighboring Abraham Brown School, and the gravesites of Abraham, Lydia, and a number of their descendants. Held numerous town positions, including that of Town Treasurer, Assessor, Selectman, Town Clerk, and Captain of Militia. He was licensed as an innkeeper in 1709, and continued as such for 4 years. Appointed guardian in 1708 of the 17 year old Ephraim WILLIAMS, later Col. and father of the founder of Williams College.

Children of Mary and George CUTTING: Lydia married Nathaniel GODDARD; Mary married Henry BOND; George; Hannah; John; Abraham married; Elizabeth; Grace; Josiah married Orpah; Eunice; Samuel; and Jemima.
  2. Jonathan - b. 1694, Watertown, MA; d. Jul. 25, 1758, Watertown, MA.
  3. Patience - bap. Jun. 27, 1697, Watertown, MA; d. before 1730. Married Mar. 25, 1714, Weston, MA Elisha SMITH (b. Jan. 11, 1691/2), son of Jonathan SMITH and Jane PEABODY. Children of Patience and Elisha SMITH: Jonathan married Susanna STEARNS; Patience married Abraham SANDERSON; Elisha; Abraham; Prudence; Abraham; Robert; and Phinehas.
  4. Lydia - b. Dec. 30, 1697, Watertown, MA; d. Feb. 5, 1768, Lexington, MA. Married Oct. 2, 1716 Joseph HASTINGS. Bond's Watertown identifies Joseph as the son (b. Jan. 3, 1684/5, Watertown, MA) of Joseph HASTINGS and Martha SHEPARD, and gives Lydia's death as before Dec. 15, 1730 under the BROWN family, but gives births of her children to 1742 under the HASTINGS family. Bond gives the children of Lydia and Joseph HASTINGS as: Elizabeth; Lydia married Lt. Zechariah SMITH; Grace married Phineas WARREN; Joseph married Hannah HASTINGS; Eliphalet; Lucy married Moses WINSHIP; Josiah married Lydia BALL; Jonas married Mary BENJAMIN; Susannah married John CUTLER; Elizabeth married Jonathan CUTLER; Thankful married Elnathan ALLEN; Isaac died in infancy; and Lois married Elisha HOBBS. Hudson's History of Lexington identifies Joseph as the son (bap. Jul. 10, 1698, Lexington, MA) of John HASTINGS and Abigail HAMMOND, gives Lydia's death as noted above, and says they had seven children. Hudson says Joseph married second Jan. 16, 1769 Mrs. Sarah STEARNS (d. Mar. 23, 1783). Clarification is being sought.
  5. Hannah - b. Oct. 5, 1699, Watertown, MA; d. Nov. 3, 1775. Married May 24, 1720 Ebenezer BIGELOW (b. Sep. 4, 1698), son of Joshua BIGELOW and Elizabeth FLAGG. Children of Hannah and Ebenezer BIGELOW: Ebenezer married first Anna HARRIS, and second Mrs. Hepsibeh DUFORE; Josiah died young; Hannah; Moses married Mary HAMMOND; Hopestill married Esther BENEDICT; Silence married John DAVENPORT; Joshua; Abraham; Elijah; Josiah; Samuel married Elizabeth HUBBARD; and Benoni.

Dec. 3, 1705, Watertown, MA), daughter of John and Mary (HARRINGTON) BEMIS, and widow of John FLAGG. Daughter of John and Abigail BROWN: Abigail married Israel WHITEMORE. Children of John and Hannah BROWN: Sarah; Anna died young; John, participant in the 'Boston Tea Party', married first Hepzibah WESSON, second Abigail BEMIS, and third Sarah COOLIDGE; Josiah; Phineas married first Sarah PATTERSON, and second Elizabeth BACKUS; and Lois married Ephraim PIERCE.
