Captured by British forces at the surrender of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776 and remained a prisoner of war until he was exchanged for British POW's four years later (1780).
Son of a convicted felon, and a Revolutionary War veteran, was commissioned as a Major by Govenor Lee of Virginia, on May 6, 1793, in the 55th Regiment of the Virginia Militia.
In 1801, he was appointed a Magistrate (judge) of Jefferson County, Virginia by Govenor Monroe. Later, he became Sheriff of Jefferson County by appointment of Govenor James Barbour.
