About Abraham M. Hare, Colonel, USA
Col. Hare was the son of Jacob Hare and Mary Teeters. He married Sarah Olmstead 20 October 1836 in Ohio, but lost her just over one year later. He came to Muscatine in 1841, and in 1844 married Emiline P. Austin, by whom he had two children: Austin J. and Ida.
In the early years of the Civil War, he accepted a commission as Colonel of the 11th Iowa Infantry, which mustered at Davenport. At the battle of Shiloh, 6 April 1862, he commanded the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division, Army of Tennessee, under Major General John A. McClernand. It was composed of the 8th and 18th Regiments Illinois Infantry, the 11th and 13th Regiments Iowa Infantry, and Battery D, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. He was wounded and subsequently forced to resign his commission.
