Confused with Abraham Odom
Abraham J. Odom, Sr. was born about 1705, probably in Chowan North Carolina and died Feb 1771 in Edgefield, South Carolina. Will proven April 6, 1771. (fn1)
Parents: Jacob Odom (1685-1735) and Susanah.
Married:
"The Vanns, Rogers, and Langston's according to old records lived near SARAM CHAPEL, an old landmark in what is now Gates County, which was at the head of SARAM CREEK in the BENNETT'S CREEK section. There were two Indian towns not far from this same settlement. One of these was near the mouth of Meherrin River which was occupied by the Meherrin Indians. In fact, Indians were all around them at that period and it was much later when the Indian lands were laid out lower down on the Morratuck or Roanoke, in the bounds of present Bertie County NC. Among the neighborhood of these families were the Ross family, the Odums, the Hayes, the Barnes, Jones & Williams, as well as the Alstons and the Daniels, with whom they were intimate and with which they probably intermarried then and later." (fn2)
He was born about 1705 to father Richard Odom who owned land in Nansemond County, Virginia. By 1715 the family had moved to Chowan County, North Carolina. This region eventually became part of Edgecombe and Granville Counties.
Will
Abraham made his will on 30 Jan 1771 in Granville, SC. Executors of will approved 13 Mar. 1771; will probated 6 April 1771. He mentions his plantation on Pipe Creek in Granville Co, and the tract of land on the Savannah River (Edgefield), formerly owned by Dennis McClendon and McClendon bought from Mr. DeLoatch. His wife was not mentioned in his will, so it is assumed she had died by then. Abraham mentioned four sons and three daughters in his will: Abraham (received two slaves); David (received "one-half land where I now live on upper side of Pipe Creek"); Dempsey (received the other one-half land described above); Mary (m. Parker Carradine); Sarah (m. unknown Rooke); Nancy (m. unknown Deloth); Jacob (received "land that was Mr. Lototes" [DeLoach?] "purchased of Dennis McClendon."). Sons David, Jacob, and Dempsey were executors. [2]
His wife was not mentioned in his last Will, so it is assumed she had died by then. He did mention four sons and three daughters in his Will ...
