"ABRAHAM PIETERSEN VAN DEURSEN, the Ancestor, was born in the city of Haarlem, Holland, where he was baptized Nov. 11, 1607, in the Dutch Reformed Church. His intention of marriage was recorded at Haarlem Nov. 25, 1629, at which time he was dwelling on the Groote Houtstraat (Great Forest Street), Haarlem, and a bachelor. He was married on Dec. 9, 1629, to TRYNTJE MELCHIORS, spinster, born in Gorningen and dwelling at the Smedestraat (Blacksmith Street), Haarlem, (Records of the Groote Kerk, Haarlem).

It is probable that Abraham Pietersen and his wife left Haarlem for America very soon after their marriage, as baptismal records of any of their children are found at that place between 1630 and 1635, and he is known to have been in New Amsterdam, now New York, in 1636, when he was recorded as 'of Haarlem.' The baptismal records of the Dutch Reformed Church at New Amsterdam date from 1639, therefore we have no record of the baptisms of the first four children of Abraham Pietersen and Tryntje Melchiors, though, doubtless they were born in that city. The baptisms of their two youngest sons, Pieter and Melchior, are found on the registers of the church, however. On April 14, 1657, Abraham Pietersen was granted a 'Small Burgher Right' (New York Historical Society Collection, Vol. 18, p 22). Four of his children, viz., Teuwis, Marytje, Jacob and Melchior, settled in Albany, their names as found in various deeds, being almost invariable spelled Van Deusen, omitting the 'r' which appears in their father's name.

Abraham Pietersen lived on the Heerewegh Straat, or Broadway, New Amsterdam, where he carried on t he occupation of miller and inkeeper, trading also in land and cattle. The date of his death is not known."

Abraham was baptized Nov.11, 1607 in Haarlem Holland at the Dutch Reformed Church. It is probable that he and his wife Tryntje left Haarlem for America soon after their marriage as no Baptismal records for their children are found at that place between 1630 and 1635. He is known to have been in New Amsterdam, New York in 1636 when he was recorded as "of Haarlem".

On April 14, 1657, Abraham Pietersen was granted a "small Burgher Right". Four of his children (Teuwis nicknamed Matthew, Marytje, Jacob and Melchior settled in Albany, their names as found in various deeds being almost invariably spelled Van Deusen, omitting the R which appears in their fathers name.

Abraham emigrated to New Amsterdam in1636 and took possession of the Isle of Quentensis for the Dutch West Indies Co. The Isle is also known as the Isle of Quateurs. It is located in front of Sloops Bay and the Pequator's river. In 1638, he was noted for being the first miller in New Amsterdam, an important and lucrative position in those days. In 1641, on Aug 29, he was one of the "Twelve Men" whom the commonalty chose and empowered to resolve on everything with the Director-General and Council, and on Nov 3 he was one of the "Eight Men" who sent a memorial to the State General of Hollalnd, setting forth the distressed state on account of the Indian Outbreak, and begging for assistance. In 1657, on April14th, he was granted The Burgher Right, and was Lance Corporal of Company Second of the Burghers Corp. In Oct 1664, he and his son, Isaac, swore allegiance to the (Dutch) King of England, William the Third. He lived on the east side of Heeren St., now Broadway; the third place south of Wall Street, opposite Trinity Church.

Abraham was the 3rd great grandfather of Marten Van Buren, the 8th president of the United States. He was the 7th great grandfather of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States. • Abraham Pietersen van Deursen (before November 11, 1607 – c. 1670), aka Abraham Pietersen van Deusen, was an immigrant from Holland who settled in New Amsterdam and become one of the Council of 12 that was the first representative democracy in the Dutch colony. The Van Deursen, Van Deusen, Van Duser, Van Duzer, Van Duzor, and Van Dusen families of the United States and Canada are all descended from Abraham Pietersen van Deusen, a miller and a native originating from Haarlem in the Netherlands.[1]

Birth

He was born in 1607 in Haarlem to Pieter van Deursen (c1575-?) and Maria or Paulina Vincke (c1575-?). Pieter and Maria/Paulina were married on January 15, 1591 in Haarlem. Abraham was baptized in Haarlem on Wednesday, November 11, 1607 and the witnesses were Jan Jans and Styntjen Jans.[1][2]
