Ady left Estonia at the age of 19. She went at the same time as some acquaintances from Kuressaare, who knew how to go about getting documents, etc. Ady wanted to see the world and she also hoped to meet up with Harri Meier with whom she had a romance while he attended the Merekool (Marine Academy) in Kuressaare. He was now a sea captain who travelled the world and was based in New York city. Ady started her voyage from Hamburg on the Empress of Scotland and arrived in Canada June 18, 1927. She could not remain there, most likely since there were no jobs. The group had to continue to the prairies, to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
