About Adopted Son Wakeman

Published in "The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser" of Saturday 29 December 1855:

"Melancholy Accident and Loss or Life. - On Christmas Day, Robert Gordon, a son of Mr. Gordon, of Tomago, was in a boat which had been newly launched, in company with a civil engineer, and Mr. Wakeman, sailing on the river Hunter, near Ash Island. The boat was built on a new principle, by Mr. Rock, of Ash Island, and it was supposed it would prove to be the swiftest boat on the Hunter. In testing its capabilities they cracked all possible sail on it, when it suddenly capsized, throwing all the three into the river. The civil engineer swam to the shore and was saved, but Gordon and Wakeman were both drowned, and the bodies had not been found up to Wednesday evening, although every exertion had been made to recover them. What renders this accident more melancholy and dis- tressing is that Mr. Gordon's third daughter was only a week ago killed by lightning, whilst another child had died just a few days before ; there thus being three deaths in the family in the course of a very few days."

Published in "The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser" of Saturday 29 December 1855:

"Hunter River District News [FROM OUR CORRESPONDENTS.] NEWCASTLE. A fatal accident is reported to have happened on the river, near Ash island, on Christmas Day, by which a son of Mr. Gordon, of Tomago, was drowned, together with a young man said to be an adopted son of the same. No particulars have reached Newcastle, but there appears to be too much reason to believe the report."
