About Albert John Gordon

Albert, as an 11 yo, wrote a charming little letter to "Dame Durden" of the Australian Town and Country Journal" which was published in the edition of Saturday 25 April 1896:

"Mosquito Island.

Dear Dame Durden,-This is the first letter I have written to you, and I hope I will succeed in winning a prize. I go to school at Tomago, and I have to go in the boat, as the school is on the other side of the river. About six months ago mother and one of my brothers and I went to the Richmond River in the steamer Oakland, but it was very rough, and we were all sick. The Richmond River is a very nice place, and there are plenty of pretty things to see. One day my cousin went out shooting, and he shot a carpet snake 14ft long. I have no pets, only a cat named Tot. I must now conclude. because I'm afraid my letter is getting too long.-I remain, yours truly. A. J. Gordon (aged 11).

[Dame Durden has responded:]

The court Jester:

"What's in a name? The isle you call Mosquito,

May in good sooth be prey unto the pest;

But any other name would sound far sweeter,

And scare less oft the traveller or guest.

They say that faith's by trial made completer,

(And well we know how 'skeeters trouble rest), Pray change the name for one a little neater,

Could you not call it 'Island of the Blest?' "
