About Alexander Campbell "Eck" Mckee

He was reared near Freedom, Owen, In. And received the rudiments of a good English education. His is listed as being with CO. B. 59th Ind. Vol. Inf. From Oct. 1861 to 1 Jan. 1863 under his own name and then Co. I 16th Ill. Vol. Cal. From 4 Jun. 1863 to 19 Jun. 1865 under the name of WM. H. McBride. He was captured at Jonesville, Va. 3 Jun. 1864. Held at Richmond, Va. Until 13 Jan. 1864 paroled at Charleston, S.C. on 6 Dec. 1864 later at Benton Barrack, Mo. And Camp Chase. “Uncle Eck” as he was known to friends and family was one of several Union men who tunneled out of Andersonville on the plea of digging a well and one dark night pushed up through the hole and escaped. The alarm was immediately sounded and the country scoured for the fugitives. Uncle Eck was recaptured three days after his escape and neat the close of the war those near the gate were eligible for exchange with the north. He hunted for a week among the hundreds of men to have James with him on exchange day. He could not find him so to save himself he hurried back to the gate and stayed there. He was one of the fortunate ones after eleven months and seventeen days there. He received an honorable discharge in Aug. 1865 returning to Freedom, Owen, In. residing there till 1867 when he went to Elletsville, Monroe, In. and began learning carpenter trade. 1874-6 he resided Gosport, Owen, Ind. The he was appointed foreman of the Bridge Carpenter on the I. & V. R.R. and after three years followed the carpenter trade in Greene county, In. for eighteen months. Then moved to Bloomington, Monroe, In. and builder and then on to Indianapolis, Marion, In.    - June McKee

Found in the 1884 History of Owen County, p. 923. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. Franklin Township.: ALEXANDER C. McKEE was born in Freedom, Owen Co., Ind., February 18, 1846. He was the fifth son of a family of nine children born to Joseph and Lucinda (Bartlett) McKee, natives of Kentucky, and was reared in Freedom,in the schools of which village he acquired the rudiments of a good English education. In June, 1863, when but seventeen years of age, he enlisted in Company I, Sixteenth Illinois Volunteers, under Capt. Jackson, and took part in the following engagements: Corinth, Iuka, Knoxville and Jonesville, Va., in which battle he was captured, and placed in the Andersonville Prison, where he was confined eleven months and seventeen days. He received an honorable discharge August 18, 1865, and returned to Freedom. One year Iater, he removed to Ellettsville, Monroe County, and began learning cabinetmaking, remaining four years, removing thence to Gosport, where he remained two vears. He was then appointed foreman of the bridge carpenters on the I. & V. R. H., which position he filled creditably for three years, after which he followed the carpenter trade in Greene County about eighteen months, thence going to Bloomington, Monroe County, where he at present resides, and enjoys a lucrative business as contractor and builder. December 29, 1868, he was married to Miss Mary McLaughlin, a daughter of Clark McLaughlin, a citizen of Gosport. By this union there is one child -- Flora. He and wife are members of the Christian Church.

His death was recorded in an Indianapolis paper is as follows: Death Notice - Alexander C. McKee, age 78, years father of Florence E. Whitted grandfather of Mrs. Dr. L. E. Strong passed way at the residence 641 Congress Ave. April 14th. Funeral Monday 2 p.m. at Church of Christ 29th and Annette St. Friends are invited.

This indenture witnesseth that we Samuel Norris and Kiziah Norris his wife of Owen county State of Indiana in consideration of one hundred and twenty five dollars convey and warrant to Alexander C. McKee of the county and state aforesaid the following real estate in Owen county Indiana to wit Lots Number One hundred and sixty nine (169) and one hundred and seventy (170) one hundred seventy one (171) and one hundred and seventy two (172) in the town of Freedom Owen county Indiana in testimony whereof the said Samuel Norris and Kiziah Norris his wife have hereunto set their hands an seals this 26th day of December 1864 /s/ Samuel Norris /s/ Kiziah (her X mark) Norris State of Indiana, Owen county} ss: Before me Joseph H. McKee a Justice of the peace in and for said county personally appeared Samuel Noriss and Kiziah Norris his wife and acknowledged the above deed in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand an seal this 26th day of December 1864 /s/ Joseph H.
