Near the intersection of US 36 and US 231, in the midst of the massive Detro Trailers dealership in Putnam County, Indiana, lies an old family burial plot. On this land rests pioneer, Alexander S. FARROW, and some of his family. The first burial appears to be of Alexander’s infant grandson, Milton P. FARROW, who was laid to rest in January, 1840. Despite Alexander’s desire for the land to continue to be used as a cemetery by his family and the community after his death, his 1877 burial appears to be the last.

From the will of Col. A. S. Farrow:

“I will and bequeath to James R. Farrow, David P. Farrow, Alexander C. Farrow, Joseph H. Farrow, Elizabeth S. Lockridge, Mary Q. Crow, Elvira W. Roberts, Susan J. Bryan, and heirs of my deceased sons, William S. Farrow, and Francis M Farrow, and their descendants forever my family cemetery where the dead members of my family are buried, which I wish never to be used for any other purpose than resting place for my descendants. The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall one hundred feet square which I wish my descendants to keep in a good state of preservation. The land east of the cemetery to the line between Samuel Darnall and myself is to be attached to the cemetery lot.

I give and bequeath to the citizens of Monroe, Franklin and Clinton townships, thirty five feet of ground and the north : the same and the south and west of the stone wall enclosing the cemetery : the north and south lines to intersect the west line, for a place of deposit for their dead, but no graves is to be nearest than five feet of the stone wall. The north and south lines after grant of land and to extend east to the lines between Samuel Darnall and myself.”

–Alexander Shore Farrow, 29 Apr 1876 This cemetery was restored in May of 2009 by 8th grade art students from Cascade Middle School, under the guidance of Jessica Felix. The gravestones were cleaned, repaired and reset. Also restored at the same time was the nearby Darnall Cemetery.
