About Alexander Gordon

Biographical Summary

"Alexander Gordon, born about 1516, second son of John, Master of Huntly, and Jane Stewart, natural daughter of James IV, and Margaret Drummond, and brother of George, fourth Earl of Huntly; brought up at Court as a companion to the young King James V, with whom he was a special favourite; appears in public life for the first time in 1544 as administrator of the diocese of Caitness, whilst Robert Stewart, the Bishop-Elect, was in England under forfeiture for treason. In 1547 he was nominated Archbishop of Glasgow by the Dean and Chapter, but the election being disputed by the Regent Arran, James Beaton was appointed in 1551, Pope Julius III, conferring on Gordon, as a compensation, the titular Archbishopric of Athens; appointed Bishop of the Isles 28th November 1553, but it is doubtful if he was ever consecrated, no evidence being found to that effect; trans. to this See (Bishop of Galloway) September 1558, holding in commendum the Abbeys of Tongland and Inchaffray...

...appointed a Privy Councillor 3rd November 1565, and an Extraordinary Lord of Session 26th November following...

...He attended the Assembly which opened on 6th August 1575, died on 11th November that year at Clary, Penninghame. He married Barbara Logie of Ennis (she survived him and married secondly Alexander Gordon of Grange and Barquhill), daughter of (--) Logie of that Ilk, and had issue:

  • John, his successor as Bishop
  • Alexander, died young
  • Laurence, Commendator of Glenluce, died 1611
  • George, Bishop of Galloway
  • Robert, in the service of Queen Margaret of France (slain in a duel)
  • William, probably died young
  • Barbara of Clary (married Anthony Stewart, rector of Penninghame)"
