About Alexander Mebane, Sr.

William Mebane arrived in Pennsylvania from Ireland in the early part of the 18th century. One of his sons, Alexander Mebane (1716-1793), married Mary Tinnie in Pennsylvania and moved his family to North Carolina, settling primarily in Mebanesville. Alexander was the first sheriff of Orange County, N.C., and one of the nine men who selected Chapel Hill as the site for the University of North Carolina. Alexander and Mary's six sons served in the Revolutionary War.

Emigrated from County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland to Lancaster, PA. Colonel in the Royal Government and Justice of the Peace until the Revolution. Emigrated from Lancaster, PA, to Guilford, NC, settling in Hawfields, Orange, NC. A Whig who helped defend the county and provided commissary to the Revolutionary Army during the Revolution. He lived in an area thick with Tories. His barn and fences were burned, and everything movable in the house was plundered. Although he was too old to be a soldier, all his sons served in the army during the Revolution. Alexander had six sons and six daughters - all but one settling in Orange,NC. Listed Orange Co., NC 1755?, 17791790 Census Orange Co., NC Abstract of Wills - Orange Co., NC Page 87 Book B-216 lists Will of Alexander Mebane dated April 30, 1789. This Will lists William, Alexander, James, John, Ann, Jennett, Margaret. It does not list David. I have no record of Ann, but she may be one of the other daughters with another name, possibly Suzanna."

Was a Commissary. 1781, a Captain under Col. Benjamin Williams. Orange County Regiment. 9/22/1780. Feb. 1781, a Captain in the NC State Regiment.
