Alexander Gray Raiford served as Sgt.in Bowlings Detachment, War of 1812 and Ensign, 92nd Militia District Washington Co., GA 13 Oct 1814. First Sgt.,Cap't David Clark's Vol. Co. Artillery, 1816.

Alexander was elected County Surveyor in Richmond Co., GA on 14 Jun 1836. The surveying compass he used was the same one used by General James Oglethorpe in laying out the city of Savannah, GA. On his death bed, Alexander gave the compass to the Georgia Historicl Society.
