About Ha Rav Alexander Ziskind Harkavy c. 1785-1850

AB"D from Novogrudok

Reb Alexander Ziskind Harkavy

Following Reb Dovid's death in 1836, the town engaged a Rabbi who was a landsman (a local man). He was a gaon (genius) in Torah and a businessman, Harav Alexander Ziskind, the son of Rav Gershon Harkavy and a brother of the wealthy Reb Moshe Harkavy. Initially he did not want to take on the position of a Rabbi in his home town, despite the fact that his large and influential family wanted him to do so. Only after his financial position deteriorated did he agree to become a Rabbi in Novogrudok, and he remained in that position until his death in 1850. He was a quiet and reserved man, modest in his ways, of soft voice and few words. He was nevertheless considered one of the great rabbis of his time and was often sought out by other rabbis for advice and judgments.
