Being a citizen of some considerable means, Squire Alfred considered investing in a new tobacco business venture with "Wash" Duke, progenitor of the tobacco empire, but details could not be agreed upon and, therefore, no business relationship ensued. Ann Veazey Davis was told that Squire Alfred didn't trust Mr Duke.

Known in the community as Squire Alfred, A M was a Justice of the Peace and often signed documents as A M Veazey. He is the great-grandfather of Ann Veazey Davis. through their maternal grandmother, Margaret F Umstead, the descendants of A M Veazey are related to NC Governor William B Umstead, who served from 1953 to 1954. Lassiter Hall told Ann that his grandfather, Logan W Umstead built the home on the "Veazey Ridge" that her father and his siblings were born. There was another older home a short distance away that was known as the Alfred Veazey homeplace, last occupied by Luther Alfred Veazey in 1942.
