Note: see PR Newswire Europe - UNS and LBC founder Alfred Geiringer dies: Former head of Reuter's financial news service, 'Comtelburo', and founder of Universal News Services (UNS), died.. Geiringer spent 20 years with Reuters as foreign correspondent, editor and manager. He brought the concept of PR wires to the UK from America when he launched UNS in 1959 to deliver press releases via news agency feeds. He was one of the founders of LBC, the London news radio station, in 1971. Describing UNS as the "captive news agency of industry and commerce," Geiringer at first used dedicated teleprinter circuits to deliver press releases, but introduced computer technology in the early 1980s, well ahead of most of Fleet Street.. ..Press Association bought the business from Geiringer in 1986, later merged with PNA Services to form Two-Ten Communications.. ..Incurring the wrath of Hitler and facing certain imprisonment for his anti-Nazi views, Geiringer escaped to London in Mar. 1938. In Dec. 1939 he married Margaret, eldest daughter of the then Economist editor Sir Walter Layton.. Geiringer leaves a widow, Wendy, and three daughters by his first marriage" AND The Alfred Geiringer Fellowship
