GELLHORN--Alfred, M.D., 94. Physician, Farmer, Reformer, Practical Visionary, Mentor and Humanist died peacefully at home on March 24, after an active career in medicine and healthcare policy spanning 72 years. Pioneer in oncology at Columbia University 1943--1968; Dean, U of PA School of Medicine; Founding Director, Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education of City U, and the Gateway Institute in NYC's public high schools; Director of Medical Affairs at the NYS Department of Health; Board Member and advisor for the Aaron and Irene Diamond Foundations. He was a physician-scientist, beloved teacher and mentor who wrought far-reaching reforms in graduate medical education, primary care and minority access to education. Predeceased by his wife Olga and daughter Maria, he leaves loving daughters Martha, Anne, Tina and Edna, five grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Burial will be private, with a memorial celebration in NYC planned for later in the spring. The family suggests donations to Gateway Institute, City College, Harris Hall H06, 106 Convent Avenue, NY, NY 10031.
