According to the Krakow Archives reviewed by Miros Gaszniewicz, genealogical researcher in Grodno, Aloandro, was a trader, only one son known to have been born. Under Christian rule in Spain, some Ibn Yahyas changed their surname to “Don Yahya”. In northern and eastern Europe the name often was altered to give it still more of a native sound. Don Yahya became “de Niyes”, Dongin, Donchin, Dionis, and a myriad of variations including “Diniz”.
The original name of “Alvaro Diniz” was “Shmuel Ibn Yahya” whereas the original name of Alvaro Mendes was “Salomon Abenaish” {a/k/a “Solomon Abenyaez”, “Salomao Ibn Yaish”. Aloandro was brother of “Alvaro Diniz”.
Side Note - Aaron RABINOVITCH (1876-1952) is buried at Edmonton Federation Cemetery. Aaron was a Cantor at Dukes Place Shul and also officiated at his children's weddings as Rev Aaron RABINOVITCH/RABIN. Although I do not believe he was a Rabbi himself, I have been told that he came from a family of Rabbi's and was from Krakow. He married in Mile End, 1898, to Rose DAVIDOVITCH (1878-1948) - Rosa daughter of Ezekial Ha Levi - who may have come from Riga. Aaron's Hebrew name is Raphael Arieh son of Todros Henach/Chanoch. This writer's DNA is an exact match to the Rabinovitch male Y-DNA samples.
