Alvin became the owner of a large citrus packing house. He also owned a packing house on the Florida East Coast and one of the two ice mfg. plants in Orlando.

Owned a citrus grove which was wiped out in the freezes of 1894 and 1895. He then got involved with citrus packing, processing and shipping. He build a packing house in 1910. He received a patent in 1911 for the A J Nye combined elevating and Fruit cleaning machine. It gave him the capacity to load 10 railroad cars a day making him one of the largest shippers in Florida.
