About Amelia Bailie (Crause), SM/PROG

Was supposedly an illegitimate daughter of King George IV. There is a story that some member of the Bailie family went around SA saying that if we could prove that she was the daughter of the King there would be a lot of money to be collected (the Bailie millions), so he asked everybody to pay for his trip to England, and he went off and was never seen again!

There are two sources that say Amelia Crause (1792-1864) was born in 1792 in Pembury near Tonbridge in Kent, and that her father was William Crause (born ca 1765). Her mother is just called Mrs Crause (born ca 1770)

Then we have two of the 1820 Settler parties leaving UK on 3 Dec 1819, and reaching Algoa Bay in April 1820

1 Bailie’s party (in the Chapman) Including John Bailie aged 31 and his wife Amelia (nee Crause) 28 with four children (Thomas 12, Charles 10, Archibald 8, John Amelius 4) Henry Crause 29 with wife and one child

2 Crause’s party (in the Nautilis) Charles Crause 35 with wife and five children John Crause 26
