From: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSmcid=46786169&GRid=100588164&df=30&

AMMON KNIGHTEN was born in Stokes, North Carolina on 13 August 1787. His parents were JESSE and HANNAH KNIGHTEN.

AMMON KNIGHTEN was living in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky at the time of the 1810 U.S. Census and that is where he was married to FRANCES "FANNIE" COX on 11 January of that year. AMMON and FRANCES KNIGHTEN became the parents of thirteen children and initially settled in Logan County, Kentucky where their first three children were born and they remained there until at least 1815. By 1818, they moved on to Saint Louis, Missouri where their fourth child was born. By 1820 they had moved on to Jefferson County, Missouri and where they were listed in Plain in the 1830 U.S. Census and in the town of Valley in the 1840 U.S. Census. On 12 January 1836, there is a record of a land sale from "AMMON KNIGHTEN and FRANCES his wife, both of Jefferson County to Robert Hicks of Washington County for $1500 of 320 acres of land there.

FRANCES [COX] KNIGHTEN died in Jefferson County, Missouri on 23 April 1841. In 1847, AMMON KNIGHTEN and his family departed from Missouri and made the overland journey across the plains to Oregon. Following their arrival they settled in Washington County and were listed there Milton. In about 1851, his sons, LOVELL KNIGHTEN and COMMODORE KNIGHTEN both applied for and received Donation Land Claims in Linn County and in the 1860 U.S. Census AMMON KNIGHTEN was listed with both of them in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. In 1870, AMMON KNIGHTEN was listed as residing in Forest Grove, Washington County, Oregon and that is where he died on 7 August 1877.

1.Title: Obituary Text: About 2 weeks ago Mr. Ammon Knighten died at his son-in-law's, M.M. Watts' place on Gates Creek of old age, he being a little past 92 years old at his death. He had been up in Linn Co., a short time previous when signs of his strength giving way appeared. On the week previous to his death, he had been over to his son Thomas Knighten's farm in the same neighborhood and while there had fallen down a time or two and was unable to rise again. He was a very fleshy man. He complained of no sickness or pain and at his death Mr. Watts informs us he did not so much as move his finger but died without a gasp or groan, and his spirit passed away as gentle as the summer air. Mr. Knighten immigrated to this country from Missouri in '45 and has lived in this county nearly all the time since. He was a widower, having been bereft of his wife before he moved to the coast. He was a man of mild temper and genial disposition and died of ripe old age and so knew none of the pain that usually comes from exposure and always follows evil courses. Thus another of the old pioneers of Oregon goes down to his rest.
