About Amos Wilson Bemis

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21606962 -------------------- Son of Jershua and Alvin Bemis featured in "PIONEER WOMEN" book from the San Bernardino Historical Society. Husband of Julia Frances McCullough Father of 7 children

Amos Wilson Bemis was about eight years of age when the family left New York state. He lived at various places with his parents, brothers and sisters, ever moving westward until they arrived in Iowa. After the death of his father the family went to Kanesville, Iowa, a Mormon outfitting station, where the joined an emigrant company across the plains. Amos, being the eldest son, with the help of two brothers, worked on ranches in that vicinity until they had earned enough to purchase an outfit for the trek. After the arrival of the family in Utah they moved to Ogden where, in 1853, Amos married Julia McCullough of New York state on April 17th.

When Amos Wilson Bemis was 8 years of age, the Bemis family moved to Ohio and in 1844 to Lee County, Iowa, where the father died three years later.

The family lived in Iowa three years after the death of the head of the family, and in 1851 the mother, with seven sons and three daughters, started for California overland. They did not come through to California, but spent two winters in Ogden, Utah, where Amos Bemis was married to Miss Julia McCullough of New York State.
