Migrated to Chile from Croatia

An blog written by Marie Slako on her very first visit to meet the Chilean Slako Family.........

BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY - when my great-grandfather, Ivan Slako migrated from Croatia to NZ, his brother Ante Slako went to Chile on another boat. This is the first contact we have had with that branch of the family since 1899! It turns out that we have family all over Chile and we spent a night out at the seaside resort town of Viña del Mar with another cousin Marco Slako.

So from New York state we embarked on a 24 hr travelling mission to Cininatti, Miami and finally on to Santiago, Chile where we arrived on the doorstep of my cousin Jessica Slako. The Slako family in Chile welcomed us with open arms. They showed their exicitement by feeding us a lot of meat and plying us with a lot of red wine.

Back in Santiago, Jessica and the family had organized a big reunion party. I was a little nervous about meeting 20 relatives for the first time. There were so many hugs and kisses, I was like their little puppy dog. Lucky Darren´s spanish is so good because there would have been some definite communication issues otherwise. Chilean spanish is super-fast and they chop off all the ends of their words. I think my favorite relative would have to be Juan Slako, the 2nd cousin and spitting image of my father. It was just a pity I couldn´t communicate better with him, even though my spanish has improved a lot, he talks so fast into his beard that I couldn´t catch a thing!
