Anthelme Bernex (1777-1849) came from a family originally from Amberieu en Bugey in southeastern France. He married Anne Marie Eudoxia Phillippon, the daughter of a wealthy wallpaper manufacturer whose stores were located on Paradise Street, Marsailles. Hence, he was sometimes called "Bernex-Phillippon". Anthelme would design and support a massive development project along the Avenue du Prado. His name was assigned to the 1st Street district in Marsailles.
