Antoine (or Anthony) Gabeau was born in 1756 in France and emigrated to the Carolinas in 1764, at the age of seven. He was the son of Pierre Gabeau and wife Marie Farrasteau. He married Elizabeth Henley. He died in Charleston, South Carolina on February 10, 1829, and was buried at the French Protestant Huguenot Church in Charleston.
His birth name was most likely Antoine, and not Anthony, since he was born in France. At some point after leaving France he adopted the name of Anthony. He was using Anthony by 1778, when he married Elizabeth.
Anthony entered the Revolutionary war at the age of nineteen, and was a non-commissioned officer in a corps called the "True Blues," under Captain Greenwood. He was captured in the siege of Charleston. He rose to the rank of sergeant. He has been recognized as an American patriot. His DAR ancestor number is A042822.
He appears in the 1790 US Census for St Phillips And St Michaels Parish, Charleston, South Carolina, as Anthony Gabeau. The census shows three free white males over the age of 16 at his home, seven under the age of 16, two free white females, and two slaves.
He appears as Anthony Gabeau on the 1800 and 1810 US Censuses for Charleston. Also, his burial records list first name as Anthony.
