About Antonio Štambuk

Antonio Štambuk arrived on Brač from Venice, as a oarsman (uomo de remo) on the Venetian galley Vendramin (which was most likely a merchant vessel bound for Alexandria). He was detained in Venice for reasons unknown, but the Venetians were known to press-gang foreigners to make up shortages in their galley crews, even priests were known to have been taken in this fashion. On 10th January 1713, by a mutual and voluntary agreement signed between himself and local noble Mate Nizetic [http://www.geni.com/people/Mate-Niseteo/6000000024222104498], he was conditionally released in Selca. Nizetic had paid a ransom of 578 lira securing his release, which master Anthony undertook to repay over the next three years by working as a mason, building palaces and homes on the island. Since then, upon fulfillment of the contract, Antonio transferred his knowledge and skill to numerous descendants, (whom the locals refer to as Štambuci) and they are known as skilled stonemasons and builders, some of their works include the White House in Washington and the UN building on the East River.

2013 was celebrated as the 300th anniversary of the arrival of first Štambuk (Master Antonio Standelpergher alias Stambucco, son of Andrea of the city Prague) to Selca on Brač.
