About Antonio María Ponce de León Dávila y Carrillo de Albornoz, marqués del Aguila

Life and family

  • He was the son of Joaquin Lorenzo Ponce de Leon and Baeza, VII Marquess of Castromonte and Davila and Maria Josefa Carrillo de Albornoz, III Duchess of Montemar.
  • Very young, at age 21, married Maria Luisa de Carvajal y Gonzaga, daughter of the Duke of Abrantes. At 28 his mother died & he inherited the ducal title.
  • In 1798 his daughter and heiress Maria del Carmen married Vicente Osorio de Moscoso y Alvarez de Toledo, heir to the illustrious house of the Counts of Altamira.
  • During the War of Spanish Independence was Chairman of the Board of Jaén and advocated an active role of aristocrats in the fight against the French. It was also shown several times in favor of a monarchy with feudal courts a medieval style but with broader freedoms.
  • Returning King Ferdinand VII made him, in 1815, President of the First Chamber of the Council of the Indies, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1817 and Chief of State in 1818. It was also a member of the Board for the Protection of Mutual Teaching School.
  • Lord Steward of the King in absence since 1814, when in 1820 the Count of Miranda was removed from that office by the Government of palatal Liberal Triennium. The King appointed him to that post. However, after the coup realistic July 7, 1822, the government forced the King to cesarle and replace it with the most loyal Marquis of Santa Cruz de Mudela.
  • After the failure of the Triennium can not prevent the king punished his son Altamira, Equerry imposed by the Liberal Government and Regional section of the service.
  • It will, again, Chairman of the Indies, in 1824.
