NUNNALLY GENEALOGY by Joseph Adams Shortal

PREFACE

This is but a brief genealogy of the Nunnally family of Virginia with emphasis on my own line which migrated to Alabama and Texas but with considerable data on the family that moved to Georgia. The period extends from 1640 to 1978, spanning twelve generations. I only give the names of about 500 descendants.

If the progenitor and each descendant over the twelve generations had only two children each there would be a total of over 4,000 names. Increasing the number of children per descendant to three would raise the total of possible names to over 350,000. (This assumes no intermarriages of cousins.) Thus, there are many more unknown Nunnally descendants left out than are included.

I became interested in the genealogy of the Nunnally family several years ago through information supplied by my grandmother in Texas who was a Nunnally from Alabama. I was born in Texas but moved to Virginia after graduation from college and in my genealogy research I was surprised to find that my Nunnally line originated in Virginia. I have corresponded with many people with Nunnally ancestry who have been very helpful and I have included their families in this genealogy. Their names and addresses are given on a separate sheet at the end. In addition to the people on this sheet much credit should go to genealogist Major Perkins Nunnally, deceased, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas through whose efforts much of the information was gathered and to genealogist Ann Waller Reddy, deceased, of Richmond, Va., who researched the Virginia Archives for Mr. Nunnally some years ago.

I would appreciate receiving any corrections or additions to this genealogy.

INTRODUCTION

This genealogy of the Nunnally family begins with Richard Nunnally of Henrico Co. Va. who was born around 1640. It is not known for certain who his parents were or where he was born but he appears in the Henrico Co., Va. court records in 1663 when he was fined for nonpayment of Church Tithes. (The spelling of Nunnally as used herein is the one most used by the family in Virginia.)

It appears that until sometime after the Revolution all the Nunnally families in the United States were confined to the Southside areas of Virginia. In 1782 there were thirteen such families in Chesterfield Co. Va. (separated from Henrico Co. Va. in 1749), four families in Dinwiddlie Co. Va. adjoining Chesterfields Co. on the south, and five other families in other nearby counties. In the 1790 census there were four Nunnery families in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. These Nunnery families are believed to be related to the Virginia line- Nunnery being a variation in spelling of the name in Virginia along with Nunley, Nuneley, Nunely, Nunneley and Nunnelee. There were no Nunnallys of any spelling listed in the 1790 census for the remaining original States.

The name Nunnally is believed by some to have originated from the surnames Nun or Nunn with a place of origin appended. For example, Nunn a lea would be Nunn "from the meadow". On the other hand it could be derived from Nunnery, another name for a convent. No ship passenger to Virginia has been found by the name of Nunnally or Nunnery but a Thomas Nunn, age 22, sailed from London September 1635 in the ship "David " bound for Virginia. A Richard Nunn, age 19, sailed from London 15 April 1635 in the ship "Increase" bound for Boston. Wheather he was related to Thomas is not known but the first Richard Nunnally in Virginia named two sons Richard and Thomas. It is not known, however, whether there was any relation between the emigrant Thomas Nunn and our Richard Nunnally. There was a separate family with the Nunn surname in Virginia beginning with a Thomas Nunn, born 1680, in Chesterfield Co. Va. While no evidence has been found to connect him with the 1635 emigrant of the same name, he is believed to have been a grandson. (See "The Nunn Family" by John Milton Nunn.) Over the years the Nunn surname has remained a separate and distinct line in America apart from Nunnally so we must assume that if there was a connection it must have been earlier in England.

Early records in England show the surnames Nun and Nunn in many counties with Nun very pronounced in Suffolk County. (See Boyd's "Marriage Index of England, 1500-1837). The surname of Nunnallly or one of its phonetic variations is found in large numbers only in the County of Shropshire. In fact, there was a village of Nunnely there in 1616. The marriage records of this county show that between 1601 and 1625 there were three Nunnally grooms named Richard and one each Edward, William, Thomas, and John. All of these names were common later in American Nunnally families. The early records of England also reveal a Nunney Castle in Somerset County as well as a Nunney Parish. It will remain for future genealogists to establish the true ancestry of our Richard Nunnally.

The numbering system I have used herein consists of the number of the generation followed by a decimal and then sequential numbers under each generation. In this manner every person has a unique number. All surnames are capitalized. Information on the parents of a family is given when the entire family is listed and a "plus sign" is shown by

the name of the parent in the earlier listing of the father's family.
