At 21 he studied law at in Michigan and was admitted to the bar in Kalamazoo at age 24. He practiced in Michigan approx 4 years. He moved to Sextonville, Richland County, WI in 1852. For several years he was engaged in a saw-mill enterpise and then came to Richland Centre and resumed the practice of law. For a number of years he was alone, after which he was in partnership with is brother, H.A. Eastland.

First married in Kalamzoo.

Married second wife at Sextonville. Lived in Richland County until 1881, when he moved to Muscoda, Grant County, WI.
