About Armstead Morehead
Armstead Morehead (1808 to 1865), had a son, Thomas Morehead, by his enslaved woman Dinah (whom other sources have recorded he treated as his wife - which I hope was true - but that might be sugar-coating the past, as many of us are wont to do). Dinah gave birth to Armstead's acknowledged son, Thomas Morehead, in 1837, or in 1859, depending on which reference one uses. Methinks there is some confusion here! Since Thomas was recorded as being born in Kentucky, it is possible that Armstead publicly acknowledged Dinah as his common-law wife and Thomas as his son, which he would have been less likely to do (even if he wanted to) if he (Armstead) had stayed in Virginia with the rest of his family of birth. The border states were considerably more realistic about life, birth, and men and women, than Virginia was (IMHO).
I must credit both Rootsweb and William Addams Reitwiesner’s work (firstname.lastname@example.org) on Muhammad Ali’s ancestry, who records Mr. Ali’s great-great grandparents as:
Armstead S ... Morehead, b. ... 14 Oct. 1808, d. Green Ridge, Logan Co., Ky., ... 1865 [non-marital liaison) Dinah , b. ... , d. ...
