About Arnold Hendrik Koning

After high school in Winschoten he attended the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Royal Art Academy) in Amsterdam from 1880 - 1885, where one of his teachers was August Allebe.

In 1886 he moved to The Hague where he befriended King Willem 2. This gave him an opportunity to travel to Paris where he met Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo. They lived together from 1888 - 1889 on the Rue Lepic. When Vincent left in 1888 he wrote a few letters to Arnold, letters which can be found under "letters from Van Gogh". Arnold returned to the Hague where he settled and visited the Royal Arts Academy. From here he made numerous trips to Gelderland, Overijssel and Drenthe. After marriage to Maria Heeley he moved to Rijswijk in 1893. After divorce in 1909 he moved to Voorthuizen where he had a house built on a pice of land he owned together with his brother Edzard Willem.
