Posted Sept. 25, 2008, at 11:18 p.m. TOPSHAM – Arthelene Mary Harriman, 88, of Foreside Road died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick. She was born in Van Buren May 29, 1916, the first child of Napoleon and Florence Littlefield Cyr. The family moved to North Monroe when she was six years old. She attended grammar school in Monroe for eight years. An interest in God and his creation started there with nature walks with her teacher, who gave prizes to those who identified the most birds and plants. She moved to Prospect in the summer of 1930 and started high school in Frankfort, later transferring to and graduating co-valedictorian from Stockton Springs High School in 1934. Arthelene married Alton K. Harriman of Prospect on Oct. 25, 1936. They lived on the family farm in Prospect until his death March 16, 1976. After the sale of the farm, she moved to Topsham to share a home with her son and family. She was self-taught in crocheting, knitting and sewing. She became interested in genealogical research while serving as town clerk of Prospect from 1962 to 1975. This interest continued until the time of her death. A Christian since November 1941, she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of Evangelical Baptist Church of Bucksport from 1965 to 1976 and transferred her membership to Berean Baptist Church in Brunswick. She was involved in both churches in Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and Women’s Missionary Fellowship. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Helen Kirkland, July 4, 2003 and Ruth Haley, Nov. 30, 2004. She is survived by a son, Wayne C. Harriman and his wife, Linda, of Topsham; three grandchildren, Scott Harriman of Garfield, Wash., Joan VanDewater of Denver, Colo., and Valerie Grindle of Augusta, and one grandchild. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. Friends may visit at the funeral home 5-7 p.m. Friday.
