About Arthur Lucan

<The Times, May 19, 1954>

<MR. ARTHUR TOWLE>

Mr. Arthur Towle, known professionally as Arthur Lucan, whose death at the age of 67 was briefly reported in our later editions yesterday, for long delighted large audiences, particularly in Yorkshire and Lancashire, with his perenially entertaining impersonation of "Mother Riley."

Belonging, as he did, to the old school of knock-about comedians, he recognized early that he had created a popular character, and as the years passed by developed it and rounded it off with a sure touch whch time could not wither nor custom stale. He had been in the theatrical profession since he left school, and in 1913 he married and he and his wife began a double act which in those days was called "Old Mother Riley and her Daughter Kitty," or "Lucan and McShane."

The homely adventures of the naive "mother" and her sophisticated daughter, spiced with a salty Irish flavour, were favourites not only on the boards but on the air as well and it was only a matter of time - in 1937, in fact - for the cinema companies to realize the possibilities of the act. The many films of the pair in various situations were great successes. The partnership broke up after the last war and Mr. Towle carried on alone, keeping alive the fame of the endearing, bemused old woman, who seemed to those who laughed at her antics to enjoy an existence of her own.

END.
